Subject: The old 4.7 against R/T thing IP: Logged
Message: Been seeing discussions and flame wars over this subject for some time now but I needed more numbers from the race track to satisfy myself. Well I got them last night. It is true that the 4.7/5 sp./3.92 combo will out run a stock R/T. I, also know that the 5.2/5sp./3.92 will out run the stock R/T. We have one of each....or we did till last week when both were traded in on Lightenings. Anyway I got to see a 4.7/auto/3.92 run. No where close to the R/T. If we compare apples to apples the R/T is faster. I, also got to see a stock '99 5.2 cc/auto/3.55 run against a stock Y2K 4.7 cc/auto/3.55. Multiple passes proved just what I have thought all along and that is the 4.7, performance wise, is the same as the 5.2. Well this will probably start some kind of a war but all vehicles that I am talking about is stock. Some will say that there is no substitute for cubic inches but that just ain't true. Substitute a standard transmission and you will see the difference. Substitute cubic dollars and you will see a bigger difference. I put cubic dollars into my '99 5.2 cc/auto/3.92 and beat both the '98 5.2rc/5sp./3.92 and the '99 R/T cc. Now they bought Lightenings and I'm the slow guy again. Bummer.

Message: Very true but the part about the manual tranny and no replacement for cubic inches. Well who the hell figured that chrysler would not put a 5 speed manual in a R/T It makes no damm sence. They build a half ass race truck but use a truck tranny designed for towing. Chrysler should make a new 5 speed for the R/T and all of a sudden the 4.7s wouldnt be so big.

It's not all Chryslers decision on what they can put into a vehicle. There are environmental compliance regulations that must be meet to pass certain engine an tranny combos.

Message: THANKS WAYNE FOR THE NUMBERS. YOU HIT THE THING I WAS GETTING AT RIGHT ON THE NOSE. ALL THE R/T GUYS WANTED TO FIGHT ABOUT IT BUT STOCK VS. STOCK WAS THE ISSUE. AND CUBIC DOLLARS IS THE KEY. GIVE ME THE $36,000 CUBIC DOLLARS TO SPEND ON A R/T AND I WOULD KILL ME A LIGHTNING, SYCLONE, ETC. I HAVE BEEN BUILDING MAGAZINE VEHICLES FOR ALONG TIME AND THE REASON IS THAT A ENTRY LEVEL VEHICLE CAN BE DECKED OUT TO OUT PERFORM THE FACTORY'S TOP MODEL FOR A HELL OF A LOT LESS. BUT MY HAT IS OFF TO MOPAR FOR STUFFING A BIG BLOCK INTO A DAKOTA. BESIDES WHAT GOOD IS A R/T NEON???

Message: I also appreciate the numbers, but I must point out that Mopar did not stuff a big block into the Dakota. The 5.9 is a 360, which is just a small block.

Message: Not to run this this 4.7 vs 5.9 thing into the ground, but a stock 4.7L can also outrun a mod'd R/T as well. I raced a 2000 R/T with the new Powerdyne Supercharger kit. I have a 4.7 5-spd Sport Club Cab with a 3.55 posi rear with a Volant Intake Tube and that's my only mod. My 15.48 at 89 mph crossed the line before his 15.88 @ 95 mph. His big 17" tires with their stiff sidewalls spun all the way to the 1/8th mile marker. He finally bit and started coming on hard, but by the big end, it was too late to catch me. A lot of this "who can beat who" arguement depends on the driving, as well.

Message: Sure. Looking at that 95 mph e.t., he'd probably have run a 14.0 flat. Could've whipped my ass by a full 1.5 seconds, right? But, like I said, some of it depends on the driver. Cubic dollars can only get you so far.
In the pouring down rain, a Moped could beat John Force. A lot depends on the driver.

Like what kind of engine it has.
Regardless of thr engine there should be a SC for it unless it came with a 3.7 liter if the V6 is still a base modle option.

Message: I too am wondering if we will ever see a Mopar factory SC. I think you can get a TRD SC on about anything Toyota makes and still keep the warrenty. How about an TRD SC IS 300?
It would be a great way for DC to make $4,000+ a pop. Some people actually get paid to come up with ways to increase a company's bottom line....

Message: While I realy like my 2001 4.7 QC 4x4 SLT+..... I realy doubt that this engine is going to be as durable as the LA motors were. I think the the pistons and rings are going to be be a real limiting factor for durability. TRW already makes a replacement for the Jeeps with the 4.7. They moved the rings down, lengthened the skirts and increased ring tension a little. These few things should solve the durability issues.

Message: J-man, if the truck you bought had a 5-speed tranny in it then it wasn't a R/T since R/T's only came with the auto tranny. Nice choice of engines though, but why didn't you just use the t-56 out of the Viper instead of the 727??
