1 it is cyanide not "sinide"

2 actually pvc gives off chlorine gas not cyanide

3 in computer wiring systems you have pvc insulation and what is known as "plenum insulation" the plenum insulation is approoved by the national electrical code as being safe to run through HVAC plenums in houses and other occupied buildings. The pvc insulation is approoved for being ran inside walls away from HVAC plenums as the have been prooven in labratory tests to offgas mesurable levels of chlorine gas at temps as low as 105 degrees F.

4 Many of the stupid idiots on here have argued with me that pvc will hold up under the hood without melting, I thankyou DStarr for publishing the figures that I knew were right but had no proof of.

5 Considering how cheap pvc is relative to the plastic that ALL car/truck manufacturers use, if pvc were safe under the hood MORE THEN NONE OF THEM would use it under the hood, doncha think?

6 For those of you that use the excuse"I'm on a budget" I hope your cheapo funeral is pre-paid. After getting a lungfull of chlorine gas your family will apreciate it.

7 Those of you that think you know more then me are particularly frustrating to the one person in this world that does.

I think it looks kickass. The pvc as far as resistance value, remember that with e air moving in from out side, will cool the pipe just as fast as it heats up, where as a pvc pipe will hold its heat. The whole idea of my intake was to throw on a k&n, without using something that would melt. or make my truck look homemade. My kit looks just as good as an airraid. how is your intake getting any cooler air than mine, removing the flap helps when your driving, but like i said. better than stock. and no cyanide! LOL Boys, make your decision.

Well. I'm using ABS not PVC so I'm not sure if it would make any gas when heated but this ABS is in the walls and attics of houses that reach 150 degrees. I'm sure that after the last 50 years of using ABS I'd hear of a problem of dangerous gas by now, but I'm no expert in that area.

But I do know that the filter installed under the hood will not be even close to getting colder air like this...

And yes ABS does hold heat but it still insulates alot better than thin steel.
If I do find out ABS is dangerous I'll be sure to remove it and use something else. So if anyone has some proof of that I'm all for seeing the evidence thank you.

you guys ever hear anything about the fumes a pvc pipe gives off ruining your piston rings and cylinder walls? Just something i was told when considering the material to use for the intake.

OK. First of all I don't know of anyone using PVC. It's ABS which is different in some ways I assume.
But if you can find a link to something with information about ABS intakes causing engine damage I DO want to know.

I'd tear that biatch out in a sec.
I gotta admit it's surprising aftermarket companies don't use it more. If you are going off of just something you "heard" one time it may be B.S.

I HOPE it's B.S!

WHat kind of plastic is our stock intakes made of anyway that's different?

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)

I did some searching and found nothing stating that ABS pipe was dangerous.
There was some info however about PVC pipe. But it itself would have to be burned to omit the chlorine gas.

Oh well. I've got ABS on my intake I'm not going to worry about it until I see good evidence to start!

Right now I have aluminun but the pipe is kinda small. Getting a wide pvc pipe is gonna be cheaper and I'm thinking if I give it four or five coats of high temp engine paint no gases will actually be able to escape underneath the paint. I'm pretty confident that's gonna work but if anybody knows better, please let me know....

USE ABS and Rubber Fernco Fittings. Looks a lot more stock than ABS and less chance of death.

You can get 3" ABS pipe at an RV Dealer. They use it still for wastewater removal on them!

I think you meant ..."it looks a lot more stock than PVC and less chance of death..." when talking about ABS.

I bought my ABS and "NO HUB" rubber fittings at Home Depo.

Man I live in Houston, TX and I know Phoenix is hotter in the summer. I have been using PVC piping for CAIs for about 3 years on a few different cars/trucks and haven't had one even pop a leak or had even the slightest indication of sagging. I just made another one for the 1.6 4 banger going in my wee car it has 5 coats of ceramic high heat paint (red) and will get 5 more of the same in a burgundy color to match the engine. I've purchased what I believed was everything needed to assemble a CAI: 3" Fernco Elbow, 3" ABS pipe and an APC Intimidator Air filter.

My first problem is that the diameter of the Air Hat is 3" and opening diameter of the Fernco Elbow is 3.5". What can I do to take up 1/2 in. of slack?

How have others, that made a home brew CAI, attached the elbow to the air hat sice they are different diameters? I thought about cutting a 1-2" piece of ABS to glue around the air hat opening but I'm not sure that is what I want to do.

My second problem is mounting the air filter to the ABS pipe. The flange on the air filter has an inside diameter of 3" and the outside diameter of the ABS pipe is 3.5" and inside is 3".

What can I do to attach the filter to the ABS? If I could find a piece of pipe with an outside diameter of 3" I'd could make a sleeve that could fit in the opening of both the filter and pipe, but other than that I'm not certain how to connect the two.

What can I do the assemble this mod? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad

Dang,

Why don't you guys just buy some 3" polished stainless pipe from a metal scrap yard?

at $3 per ft. even the poor bastards can afford it. lol

The rubber elbows they make them in 30, 45, 90 deg. $8.5 ea.

Why make them out of pvc or abs?

Here's a pick of the intake.
