Message: Hey all,
I have a Gibson Superflow muffler on order; looks simple enough to take out the old one and put in the new one, but wanted to check here first; I just need to take a hacksaw to it and get two clamps, right? Cut out the old one, measure a few inches since the Gibson is a little longer, cut off that too and then clamp it in? Do the cuts have to be perfect, or will the clamps make up for minor imperfections?
Thanks in advance!

Message: Take my advice and skip the clamps. Your best bet is to take the muffler up to a muffler shop and have them weld in the new one. You probably won't have the correct flanges to use clamps anyway. It should be fairly cheap. My shop does it for around $20 if they dont have to add pipe.

Message: By flanges, do you mean like the ends of the openings in the muffler being wide enough to fit around the pipe for a snug fit? I'm not sure if it has them at all; gonna have to see when it comes in. I'll call around and see what it'll cost me; guess that would be quicker and easier anyway. Thanks, CyberWolf.

Message: Where are you finding a $20 install? I've called three local shops and they range from $40-50 to install it. No way I'm paying some jackoff $50 for a few minutes of torchwork and clamping!
Of course I say that now...
Wish *I* made $50 for ten to fifteen minutes' time!

Message: It just depends on who you know. Also, most of the shops I know will overprice stuff on the phone. I actually can get it done at my muffler shop for 5 or 10 bucks but I have given them quite a bit of business. Yes, I have had a shop take my car off the rack because he told me $50 after he got it up there to do the same thing. I went down the street and payed $25 only because my normal shop was closed. Take them a case of beer, most of them will do it for free for that around here.

Message: Followup: My friend and I did the muffler swap ourselves. I was going to do the muffler shop thing, but he insisted we could do it fairly easily. Wasn't as hard as thought, but he had an air wrench and power saw. We just undid the clamps (the original was clamped on already - no welds except for the front clamp to the holder, which remained), removed the back pipe behind the muffler (flathead screwdriver pried rubber part over tips), measured, cut some of the pipe behind the cat, cut again when it wasn't enough, and installed again with the new Gibson using air wrench to tighten those clamps BIG time. Took us two hours with numerous beer & cigarette breaks.

Message: The shop that installed my Flowmaster had to enlarge the pipes to the size of the pipe. Can't do that at home.
I like Cyber Wolf's advice.
