Subject: GenII for 96' Model? IP: Logged
Message: I'm new to this site so this may have been answered. I've noticed that there are only GenII FIPK's for 97 and up. Is there that much difference between my 96 V6 and the newer V6's??
Is there a way to make the GenII work on my truck??
Again, sorry if this has been answered already.

Message: The '97 & up V6 has its throttle body too close to the firewall for an open element of any decent size to fit. Don't know if the FIPK'll work for you; seen my father's '92 engine bay, but don't recall exactly where things are. I'd guess "yes." I have a pic of mine under my mods list on my site; that might give you an idea.

Message: Thanks for the response. Do you think I would
be better off just keeping the K+N replacement filter with my stock setup or trying the FIPK GenII?

Message: Not sure on that one. I could be wrong, but I believe the general rule is that the round open elements (esp. with the top lid replaced with filter element as well) have better flow than the tube designs. But the tubes put the filter nearer the grille, where there's cooler air. On my '98, I just ripped out some foam/rubber stuff in the grille to give the outside air a straight shot thru the grille and right into my cone; dunno how yours is set up. Good luck.
Oh, and if you have the stock intake, I hear that at least for the '92 there was a little plastic doo-hickey in the line of the airflow that you could snap off for a little better response. Believe it was posted in a Mopar Muscle a few years ago. Just a thought.

Message: Thanks for you input. I'll be sure to check that out tonight.
I read one of the previous threads about cold air with little filter surface area (FIBK GenII) vs. warm air with more filter surface area (open element on top of motor) and didn't really see a conclusion.
At least the open element is cheaper (by about half) than the FIPK GenII.
Thanks for the help.
