Message: Don't listen to foolishness. 44RE is a great tranny and has a lower 1st and 2nd gear. Based on the older 904 trannies these can be built very strong. Even in the 60's and 70's the used the 904s on big blocks including 426 Hemi's. Buy you a good rebuild kit with Red Eagle clutches and Kolene steels and buy all the Sonnax upgrades that you can afford. Will put you in very good shape. You can even upgrade the planet in the overdrive to a 5 gear pinion and add a couple extra clutches in the overdrive. Also you would want all new bushings and updated thrust bearings and Red or Kevlar bands. Would be near bullet proof. 46RE is bigger and can be built stronger but unless you are over 500HP then forget about it. Also make sure you use a new torque converter. A Transtech kit cost me $200 on ebay including shipping and most of the other stuff you can get at Oregon Performance Transmissions, or Transmission Parts USA. Best bet on a converter would be PATC as well as other parts.
