I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota, 5-speed with a 3.9L V6 in it. And I am going to get a Cat-back exhaust system from Flowmaster. But my question is this; should I go with the two chrome pipes straight out of the back underneath the stock bumper or should I go with the 45 degree chrome pipes out the drive and passenger sides of the rear two fenders?

Does anyone have pictures of either one so I can make my chose easier?

I like the dual look coming out the back. But I rather have it coming out on both sides behind the rear tires. To me it looks alot better, and not many people have this setup.

I'll send you a pic of an R/T with this setup. Tell me what you think.

I personally like the side exit. But when I bought my truck, I really wanted a Mustang, so I ran mine out the back at the far corners.. looks like a Stang! it is a one off.. had it custom done. 250 for it all
I have pics if you want to see.

When I get my new QC, say, next year, I am going with the behind the tires exit.

Ever backed into a dirt bank while loading something. I have ten minutes loading and fifteen prying mud out. Turn them out the side.

Either straight out the back, out the sides, or a single out the side...they all work well. It's personal preference on the sound. As for what Bean posted...hehehehe....oops...yeah, I have. ;)

(But now I know what kind of clearance I have behind me.) hehehee

Hey Bernd,

What gives you the deep rumble sound?? Out the sides I heard doesn't give you as good of deep throaty sound as straight out the back. And I am getting a catback system, so two pipes are necessary.

Thanks for the advice.

is your truck a short bed? i dont know about the newer ones but i have an 89 short bed and i wanted to get em out the side but the spring hanger gets in the way so i would have to have them going out about 3in. from the rear bumper which i think looks tacky.

Hey Offroad322,

Think of a tail pipe as a speaker, where ever you point it, out the side or out the back you'll hear it. It all depends on where you are standing. If you want the sound to come from the back, point them to the back it will give you that full stereo sound you probably want after you drive by any body.

Side exit are more for looks, they will sound nice, if your standing on the same side as the pipe(s) are pointed. The sound in the back will be quieter, but still there.

When I owned my 95 Dakota, 3.9...I got a lot of compliments on my exhaust. It was Flowmaster, and they were installed so they came out diagonally in the back. I personally thought they looked sweet, and some people even told me my truck sounded like a V8. I don't think it makes too much of a differenc in sound however you do it. Just my opinion.

I have mine coming out right behind the back tires at 90 degrees and I like how it looks. I have the IMCO exhaust system. I especially like it when it is cold out because it lets out big steam clouds out both sides when I romp on it(lol). But it sounds really good too. After I had my exhaust installed I realized it runs pretty close to the spare tire which is stored underneath the bed and I wasn't sure if it would get hot enough to melt the tire or not but it hasn't done anything yet and I have had my exhaust for over a year now. But as far as I'm concerned I think it looks better coming out the sides on a Dakota, it just doesn't look right coming straight out the back especially if you have good sized chrome tips on it.

If you are looking for real loud, just buy some glasspacks and soak them in diesel fuel for a while till it eats away the fiberglass inside then clean them up an put them on. No one will ever know that your mufflers aren't functionable and the cops can't get you cuz "You have mufflers on it". Just a little trick I learned since straight pipes with no mufflers is illegal here. It might be a little loud for some people's liking though.
