Subject: 340 Build estimated HP?

Alright, for all you engine builders with way more experience
then me, I have a question for you. I had a 340 motor out of
a 70 duster. Rebuilt it with an eagle 4340 crank, Howard Billet
U.D. Connecting rods, punched .30 over, Speed pro forged
pistons, stock heads, Ported and polished, edlebrock
performer RPM intake and cam, Edelbrock 750 CFM 4bbl on
top. Custom headers. Not having access to a dyno, what do
you think is a good estimate on the power of this thing. It's
going in a 92 Dak 4x4.

There are quite a few variables. Heads? Valve sizes? Compression Ratio? There are some calculators that could probably give a close estimate but it's still just an estimate.

Since you insist, 300 @ the flywheel. It's still just a guess. IMHO, you can't brag about what you've got unless you've got proof to back it up. Timeslip or Dyno Sheet.

I know this post is over a month old. I just got around to reading the "Performance" posts. I'd say with your combination, with PROPER machining and assembly, 380 to 400HP at
the flywheel. With 11.1 CR, you'll have to be conservative on the ignition timing if you're running pump gas. One question. Why the aftermarket crank? The '70 340's came stock with a forged crank. Was the stock crank missing or damaged when you got the engine?

Thanks for the reply, I have not got around to getting it in the
truck yet, but I have had it up and running...I put older 93
octane in when it was on the stand and I had slight knock, I'm
probably going to attempt to fab up a meth injection system,
because the timing is at a sweet spot.

And yes, the crank was rust pitted pretty bad so I just went all
new.

Those 340's are great engines. Good luck with it.

One last thing. Use a good break-in oil when you finally get it in the truck, or if you're running it regularly on the stand. Brad Penn oil is excellent. It has a very high ZDDP (zinc) content. This is especially important if you're running a flat tappet cam. Brad Penn is the old Kendall "green" oil. If you're running a cat converter, however, you'll have to run an alternative oil because the high zinc content will destroy the cat. Any good speed shop should carry Brad Penn.
Run a good filter such as Wix/Napa Gold. PLEASE don't run the Fram OCOD (orange can of doom).
