Subject: 3.9 -> 4.7 swap IP: Logged
Message: ok, so my truck is a 2003 quad-cab with a 3.9l and a 5-speed. A buddy of mine is putting a 6.1l hemi in his 2009 dakota, and has a 4.7l that he is prepared to sell me, allong with some of the wiring harness. what I would like to know is how hard is my engine swap going to be? I can get the computer and the trans, but I'm not sure how much of the wiring harness is intact. would the new 4.7 bolt up to my existing transmission (if i want to keep the stick-shift)? How much modification needs to be made to the engine bay in order to make the v8 fit? Will all of the gauges work, since they are from two different generations of truck? I will admit that I am nowhere near an expert on these trucks, nor do i have a lot of mechanical expertise (I'm 17). Any imput is appreciated, i'm not dead-set on doing this engine swap, but it would be awesome considering the engine is almost new, and he doesn't want a lot for it.

Message: I am thinking you would be in for a real headache trying to put an 09 4.7 in an 03. to make it work you would need the 03 pcm but the 09 engine will not run on the 03 pcm because of sensors and actual mechanical differences (ie, tone rings on the crank and cams). If you are serious about it I would recommend buy a 4.7/4.7 ho out of a 03-07 (i think those are all compatible) and start there. I can't remember which trans you have but the bell housings are different between the 4.7 and 3.9. I would keep it a stick though. Good luck if you attempt it (overall cheaper to sell your truck and buy a 4.7 qc)

Message: If you can find a donor truck from say '01 to '03 with the same drivetrain as yours but with a V8, that would be the easiest. The 5.9 was even offered those years and would be a little easier than the 4.7. With the donor truck you'd be sure to have everything you need to complete the swap. Look for one that's been rolled. It would have the least damage to the parts you need.

Message: gut everything out, get a 440 bored and stroked to 540 and fit with a 47RH or a 5 speed, and switch over to manual controls for battery/speedo
thats what i would LOVE to do, along with a Dana 60 front,80 rear from a 2001ish 2500 HO cummins
i guess i could go for the gusto and do 2 1/2 ton rockwells and 54 swamper boggers. A long as we are dreaming and money is no object

Message: I have a 01 dodge dakota sport, regular cab,
4x2. It has a 3.9l v6 with almost 82,000 miles
on it. I was thinking of buying a ram 1500
between 03-04 with the 5.7l hemi. I need to
know is will the frame without modifications
(except putting new motor mounts in) handle the
hemi? Where can i get a wiring harness that
will plug and play? What about modifications to
the a/c, heat/heater core, radiator, and
firewall? Is it worth the time and can I get it
done in 2 months?
