Subject: $2011 Challenge Dak IP: Logged
Message: I recently purchased Shelby Dak #1238 - Red to go with my #233 - White. #1238 is not is bad shape so the $1200 I paid for it was very good. My sonsand I are entering it in the GRM $2011 Challenge this coming fall. I have $800 left to spend and the truck has to compete in drag race, autocross and concours competition. The body work is not a problem and I can make it handle well enough on the cheap, but I need to make this truck run the quarter hopefully in the 14s. I don't care about the long-term survival of the engine as it will be taken apart and restored following the competition. I figure I have about $250 to spend on going fast so used parts and fabrication will be a must. I am thinking a used nitrous setup, but what about turbos. I can get used turbos very cheaply, but making them work on the 318 is an unknown for me. Any ideas out there?

Message: These things (with the 318 aka 5.2 Magnum)....is yours a magnum? Anyway, I usually see these running in the mid to low 14's at the strip all the time. Remove any excess you can, (gut the interior until retoration) every 100lbs is worth a tenth in the 1/4. You can mill the horns off the throttle body and taper bore and polish it yourself for free. Install a manual steering rack out of a 4 cyl Dak (- pump= weight savings), fab up new bumper mounts out of aluminum, remove spare, inner fenders etc. Remove manual fan and install electric fan = free HP. 180 degree thermostat $6.
I (just last week) picked up a 93 Dak with a 5.2 and a 3.55 Posi for $1200. It's actually a nice clean little truck with 140,000 Km's on it (I'm Canadian)It has a MP computer already on it and an open element air breather (also worth a few HP)This will be my new dedicated drag truck (also my $2011 challenge)

Message: Not a Magnum. 175hp and 16.5 seconds when new. Not gong to butcher it as it is almost complete and it is a numbered truck. If I can get it up over 200 hp for $200, I would be happy.

Message: Why not unbolt the motor and trans for now, set it aside for when you do the resto, and shop the internet for a decent 360/904 combo. I've seen fresh 360's that make over 350hp for $500-600 all over the place, and stock ones for $100-200 and a 904 trans takes a lot less power to turn than a auto-OD. SMR transmission's (you see them advertised on the MOPAR mags) claims 1.5 second gain in a Dakota R/T from switching to a 904 from the auto-OD. You can pick up 904's for $50-75 (some people even give them away)and do a little fab work yourself for the tranny mount.
