Subject: 3.93 to 3.73 Swap Questions IP: Logged
Message: This question really applies to anyone with the 4.7 and NV 3500 5 speed manual transmission. I welcome info from anyone running the 3500 and 3.73 gears though. I swapped from the stock 3.55 and open diff to the 3.93 and an Auburn Limited back in 04. Gas was only $1.21 a gallon here then the 3.55's were killing my town MPG and were well... balless. Fast foward to today, gas prices stink and I'm running more interstate now. Don't really want to put the 3.55's back in and was looking for input from anyone running 3.73's. Yea it's not a big step, so, I'm hoping they would be a fair stop gap (read compromise) gear. Specifically whats your average MPG? How has the addition of ethanol affected your averages? What is your average RPM at 55-60 and 75 MPH? And do you still feel enough power to tow a bass boat or haul a load of dirt or gravel and not fear merging with fast moving traffic or have to exsessivly slip clutch to get moving. Again any info is much appreciated.

Message: Chris, I don't have a 4.7 w/ NV3500 but here is a little info. If you're running 255/65/16 tires with the 3.92 gears your can get the same effect as going to a set of 3.73 gears by running a 265/70/16 tire instead of swapping gears. You're looking at about a 5% difference between 3.92 and 3.73 and a 265/70/16 has about a 5% larger diameter than a 255/65/16.

Message: Thanks for the reminder Daddio. Hadn't thought about tire ratios (Duh) Really want to keep speedo correct tho. Guess I could just buy a set of 3.73 to try or just put 3.55 back in. Belive it or not after I priced a new set of stock size Michelins it's cheaper to swap gears as I'm not paying labor. Good to be a mechanic sometimes huh?

Message: You'll want to check your odometer and speedometer against a GPS. If you think it's correct, you may be mistaken. The error in my cars is anywhere from 0.7 to 5%. I actually changed the gearset on the speed sensor to make the 5% more accurate.
