Subject: 99 Dakota V8 Swap, Dash Questions IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I've been doing some reading recently about
swapping a small block in place of my V-6. From
what I can tell it, mechanically it will bolt to
my current motor mounts/transmission. What I am
really curious about is if the stock dash will
work without a PCM present? Or if I can piggy back
without it running the motor. I am looking at
doing a 360 controlled with megasquirt, with a AX-
15/NP231 behind it.
I understand that I will have to have the motor
internally balenced or find a fly wheel with the
correct balance. I also understand the limits of
the transmission in terms of torque input.
The truck as it sits is a 99 Extended cab, 5speed
4x4. The truck is 99% street driven with the 4x4
used primarily for the snowy conditions common
around here.
So, with a Magnum 360 internally balanenced and
oil pan from a 4x4 318 Dakota, running aftermarket
fuel injection, does anybody see any issues here?

Message: The dash gets it's signals from the PCM. With alternate management of the motor, MIL will be lit all the time. Many state inspections require MIL to light when starting; then go out once engine is running. If your state is like that, it would be an issue.
This will also be more torque than your transmission is designed for.

Message: I am doing a V6 to 360 swap in a 98 Dakota and you will need a PCM for a V8 so it has the drivers for all 8 cylinders. The PCM can be reprogrammed to run the 360. B&G Chrysler can do this for you. The flywheel for a 360 can be tough to locate, I got mine from High Gear Transmission in Memphis TN, good people to deal with. Better check on that oil pan all my research shows that 318 oil pan and 360 is different due to rear main bearing. I have used R/T oil pans because they are for a 360 in a Dakota. Ram will not work for a fact. Heater hoses will be too short and the throttle cable will need to be replaced with one from a V8. I sat down and added the extra 2 wires for the fuel injectors to the PCM. Not a difficult swap just make sure the flywheel has the slots for the crank position sensor.
