Subject: need some help.... IP: Logged
Message: my truck is having some problems. the engine sounds, in my opinion, horrible. its a dodge dakota. to best describe it.... it sounds like an "old man car" it just kinda puts instead of a regular v6 engine sound. i have a dual exhaust, headers, and intake on it. nothing else. does anyone know some basic troubleshooting i could do to figure out why it sounds like *** even with the $700 dual exhaust and header work done to it, it doesnt even sound like its running when idling at a red light. and it sits at 750ish rpm's too. what could be some reasons it sounds soo old and "putty" like?

Message: It's a V6
and you were expecting to put a big exhaust and
make it sound like a V8
Sorry but won't happen
& if you went to large on the pipe diameter
you killed your low end trq.

WOW!!!
Simple is right. An odd-fire 90 deg v6 will never sound like a v8. As Bucket asked, "How does it run?"
A little more info on the truck may help too.
750 RPM @ idle is not bad.

Message: it runs alright. when i first got it, it didn't sound like it does now. it ran much better, and was very "peppy". Now its kinda slowed down a bit, doesn't even sound like its running when idling, and has this odd "put" sound when it just sits there. But that sound only comes on after its been driven for 3+ miles or so...
and the exhaust was thrown on by the original owner, i just like the sound of it :-p. its a regular pipe, and at about the rear axle, there's a muffler, then a Y pipe, then two separate pipes run to the back.
i don't expect it to be perfect. its only a 2003, with just over 100,000 miles on it. 5 speed. it just passed inspection 6 days ago. so no O2 senors are bad. but something definitely is wrong with it....
thanks guys

Message: You said he put "intake" on it. An intake manifold perhaps? Maybe you have an intake or header gasket leaking when it warms up. A header gasket would give it a "put" or ticking sound. Worst case, maybe you have a "burnt valve." If one cylinder is running lean from an intake leak, it could happen. More info on the muffler would help too. Maybe something got loose in the muffler and it's blocking the exhaust flow. There's too many possiblities. Look and listen under the hood and along the exhaust path when its running and report back. Also, you might get better replies on the General board. Watch out for Trolls though!
