Subject: Accel or MSD IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know what the turn ratio is on a stock ignition coil for a 99' with a 318?
Accel says theirs is 76:1, is this better?
Thanx

Message: My experience with Accel, is don't believe anything they say.I am sure they make some good products, but I bought a set of plug wires and they were way off as far as the stated ohm's. They claimed 500 ohm's per foot, mine turned out to be closer to 1500. My engine actually ran worst with their wires than it did with my old wires so I kept my old wires and trashed the Accel's. I took them back but the parts store refused to take them.
I would suggest a stock coil over an Accel, but its up to you.
Good Luck

Message: Yes, a higher turn ratio is theoretically better. But there are other facters as well, like wire thickness.
The truth is, a coil will make whatever it needs to make, up to it's rating. If you have a coil that's rated at 45,000V, it will make up to that. The key words are "up to". If the engine needs 40K V to make a good spark, that's all you'll get from the coil.
A bigger/better coil is needed when cylinder conditions get harsh, like nitrous or forced induction. Otherwise, a factory coil will do just fine, and an aftermarket coil is a waste of money.

Message: I have an Accel 300+ ignition suystem on my 00R/T including the coil. MSD superconductor wires as well. Had to step up to a better (than stock) cap and rotor. The stock one is white metal (aluminum terminals) and started to "melt, and arc" better cap solved problem.
Any better than stock?? My emissions (tested every 2 years, Ontario mandate)were reduced even with everything else I have done to it. Homebew cold intake, 53mm ported throttle body, M1 intake, 1.7 Roller rockers, 180 thermostat, headers, 3" highflow cat, 3" exhaust. First outing bone stock, truck ran 15.30's, now it runs 14.20's and gets better fuel milage, and has cleaner emissions. You can have your cake and eat it too.
