I am thinking of buying a new Dakota. Which is better the 3.92 or 3.55 rear end? What are the advantagesa or disadvantages?

Tim the 355 would be easer on gas.It depends on what you are going to use your truck for.If you are going to race it occasionally ,or you are going to be pulling stuff, than I would get the 392. My opinion.

If the rearend is on the truck you should be able to look at it and somewhere it will tell you the gearing and open or LSD(limited slip/sure grip)

It has been good for a laugh. Just forget looking for a rear end for my truck. It has a custom paint job (7 colors) I would rather run it off a cliff than buy anything from freaks like u....HAHHAHAHAHa

Tim,

You didn't say if you were looking at a sc or cc,2wd or4x4, stick or auto, and if it would be a v6 or v8? These things have alot of bearing on which choose is for you. Also do you want max acceleration or mpg? Are you going to be towing anything or driving 50 miles on the freeway daily? If your like most of use, the most acceleration possible is what you want and 3.92's are what you want. If you are looking at a v6, 4x4, auto, Club Cab or a combination of them get the 3.92. With the 5spd, v8 in a standard cab, 2wd is the only combo I would even think about 3.55's gears.

The other questions about gearing there are a couple of ways to find out. If the rear is stock, the glove box(97+) or under side of the hood will say(92-96). The rear housing itself should say what gears are in it. If you can't find it these ways or you bought the rear and don't know if stock gears are in it try this. With the rear out of the truck or the rear of the truck in the air, turn the drive shaft one turn and count how many times the tire turns. This is your gears you have (factory- 3.21,3.55, 3.92, aftermarket- 4.10, 4.56)

Me, I want her psychic powers. If she knows that she pays more in taxes than I make in a year, (without having ever met me or asking me what I do for a living) then I think that would be a valuable tool in the field I'm in, IT. Just think she knows that I'm not old enough for a drivers license and she's never asked my age (happy birthday to me this past Sunday, 40, WOW! I can vote now), and when I graduate, (looks off in the distance and dreams of the day) ahhh.

That way I would know a week or to in advance when a piece of equipment was going to fail, or I need to add a new user to the domain before he/she gets here, or automatically unlock a users account before they call, damn that would be cool.

Tim,

I suggest the 3.92s, they are great for pulling or running hard, but for fuel economy, the 3.55's would be best. You really have to consider what the job of the truck is going to be before you decide.

Know what's really funny here?

We are all responding to a post that was put on this board back in March of 2001. I wonder if Tim still needs an answer to his question.....

Hope he wasn't waiting on any wisdom from this board before he bought his truck. Otherwise, it's been a long 19 months.

Durrrrrr.....

PS- personally I think I am worth more than money. But, that's just me.
