Message: Hey guys!...I have a dakota99 v6 3.9 Auto and I just replace the sparkplugs wires, rotor and distributor cap, like a month ago (all original mopar parts) before and after replace them, my truck it use to start @ the first crank, now does it @ the 2nd crank, but!!!... not always does that like 1 time every day, the spark plugs I replace them like 6 months ago and I got Champion Platinum, I don't think that could be the problem but i'm not sure. Now I got NGK V-POWER and I'm thinking to put those this weekend. Just i don't have idea what could be the problem that is causing not to start @ the first time. Do you guys have any idea what could be? Any answers i would really apreciate it!...
You guys are the experts out there!...

Message: don't try to adjust the timing. the PCM controls that. as .boB suggested, check the fuel pressure @ the fuel rail. try turning the key to start, wait about 5 seconds, turn it off then back to start. if it fires right up you're loosing fuel pressure.

Message: Yeah, I wasn't suggesting for Roberto to try to adjust the timing - I was just wondering if he tried to. That would be an easy way to throw the fuel sync out of whack. Sorry if that confused anyone.

Message: Hi Kowalski!... You know!... I tried to do more testing like daddio suggested. On the fisrt crank wont start, turn the key off, then turn the swith on and leave it for 5 seconds and then it will star rigth up!... Know its doing it like 2 times a day, then works fine!... this past weekend I change the spark plugs and I put NGK on my truck the enginge got smoother than before and notice that there it was some sligth pin, pin, with the champion platinum on the engine but now with NGK its almost gone. But that doesn't resolve the ignition problem. My friend told me that could be the pressure regulator. Do you think that could be the problem? Its the fuel pressure regulator by the engine or its on the fuel pump?

Message: Go to your local parts and pickup a fuel pump pressure testor. They shoud be price around 20 to 30 dollars. It conects to the schrader valve on the fuel injetor rail on the driver side of the truck. The schrader valve will look like a valve stem end with a cap on it. Connect up the testor and turn it around so you can see it thru the windshield. Disconnect the coil wire at at the dist. and crank the engine. The pressure should be about 45 psi. I have a 97 dak v6, pretty much the same as you have.
I had a problem this last summer, where my truck quit at a 7-11 store. I cranked it a few times no-start. I usually carry the fuel pump testor with me in the truck with a spare coil and spark plug wire. First I tried the coil no-start, then tested the fuel pump good pressure. Back to the ignition tried a replacement coil wire no-start. Bypassed the MSD box back to stock, whoho it started. It turns out my MSD6A got fried. It had been on the truck for 3 years. The fuel pump tester was a valuable aid in troubleshooting my problem

There you go, you've found the problem. Low fuel pressure. Check your service manual, but I believe the fuel pump and pressure regulater are in the fuel tank, and are replaced as one unit.

Message: Could also be that pressure is okay when pumping and its just the check valve allowing the presure to bleed down when the truck isn't running. Also part of that same unit, the low bucks solution that some go with is just to live with it.

Message: Hey guys!...Sorry took me so long to comeback. Hey Wadak that its a very good coment and experience that you had before, maybe it could be happening the same thing to my truck, that fuel pressure testor that you mention seems that it was very helpfull to you on that moment, and the spare coil and spurkplug wire very good aid to help find out the problem. Yesterday I got the fuel pressure testor it was around 40 bucks not that bad, I haven't tested yet unfortunatly bad weather around here it's been raining all day and it's going to rain this weekend too, unfortunatly I don't have a garage and I have to wait to the sun comes out. bad uhh!!... I had been searching more information on the book chilton dakota/durango and find out that the fuel filter/fuel regulator only need to be replace it if its clogged or if directed after diagnostic test. I don't know if the fuel filter/regulator comes as a one unit (like .boB mention) on the fuel pump, or its part of the fuel pump 'cuase I asked the price por the fuel pump and it cost around $500.00 bucks that is really spendy. I'm going to do the test when the weather lets me do it. Or go for the low bucks and live with it, like Kowalski mentioned before. Ohh! Hey!...there is a different symptom today that I never experience before and i think is a cause of part the issue. Maybe you guys like to read it!....
Today after work, truck its been seating like 9 hours (I didn't drive it for lunch) put the key: 1st crank! engine would start, 2 seconds later engine shuts-down, 2nd crank! it would start, 2 sec. later engine shuts-down (all the lights on the dashboard will turn on when engine starts, then both will shut down the same time) 3rd crank! engine starts wants to shut-down but I press on the gas to help the engine to idle (800-1000 rpm) like 1 min. then I release the gas and engine will run little rough, 20 mins driving (truck ok! no check engine light) later got home, turn engine off, then I wait for 1 min. I start it and it would start right up!....
I really apreciate and thanks to:
Wadak, .boB, daddio and Kowalski for give me advises and ideas. Soon as i got results I will post it to let you know guys!
Thank You!...

Message: your latest problem sounds like the signs of a weak battery. it will start the truck but if it's weak the PCM will lose idle memory and either idle rough or not at all. check and clean all the battery connections and have the battery load tested. most auto parts houses will load test the battery for free.

Message: Hey Wadak!... I connect the fuel pressure testor to the fuel rail test port today by noon and it marks 47-48 psi on idle. I read on the chilton book. The pressure regulator its a mechanical device. it mantains a constant pressure of about 49 psi and the fuel pressure at idle should be 44.2-54.2 psi, and my test marks a good fuel pressure so that means that its not the fuel filer/regulator the problem, just I need to check the coil maybe it not working properly. Hey!... On your last post, you mention bypassing the PCM. How did you bypass the PCM?...

Message: Hey daddio!... this past weekend took my truck to an auto parts store and they did the battery load test and the computer read a 11.5 volts and the guy told me that the battery still very good, he is been testing other batterys and they been very low. And the truck quit making that problem since start getting warm. So I have no idea why it was doing that when the weather was really cold. I haven't check the ignition coil may be that its getting bad. the think is its not check engine light on.

Message: Hey guys!...finally I found what it was causing the Problem on my truck. After I checked the fuel pressure(ok!), the ignition coil(ok!), load battery test(ok!), still it was doing the same when the engine it was cold, it will start but won't run, the engine won't keep on idle, so I spent some time on line reading on this site and on different sites as well with their forums and i found out that the ingine won't keep on idle 'cause the (IAC)idle air control or motor, the pindle gets sticky and won't let the air go inside the throttle body when the plates are close, so I went to my near dodge auto parts and I talked to the Manager parts shop and I explained to her the symptoms of my truck, so she check the comment lines on their computer system, and she found out the same symptoms as the ones I read on line. So I got the (AIC) idle air motor and replace it, cost me $86.00 bucks, but!... the truck starts and keeps on idle like a new! every morning with no problems. Thanks to everyone for the tips!... and I hope this post can help to somebody.
