Subject: Erratic overhaeting problem IP: Logged
Message: The problem usually occurs minutes after the truck has been started and being driven. According to the gauge it heats up and runs at different operating temperatures. Sometimes it runs at a setting like it has the stock thermostat installed which it does other times it runs at a setting like it has an 180 degree thermostat installed. Other times the temperture rises to a setting that would indicate to me it is approaching 210 degrees or more before dropping back to a setting indicating an operating temperature between 180 and 200 degrees. I am going to change the thermostat, but does this maybe indicate a bad coolant temperature sensor or is this caused by something else? I don't think it is the gauge, but I guess it could be. Thanks.

Message: It could be the sensor, but I'd start with the thermostat like you. I once had one that would occaisonally stick open, causing the system to lose heat - so I don't see any reason why one couldn't also accaisionally stick closed; causing the symptoms you describe.

Message: What I did was take the radiator out of a Honda and put in my truck. It stopped over heating right away. Problem solved.
I may be stupid, but I have the answers.

Message: Moparman: Better take your own advice, since it doesn't appear you can explain this. Perhaps there was something a little different about your friend's problem ?
I've never heard of a radiator that clogged intermittently. They gradually clog, progressively loosing eficiency along the way - so under that scenario, there's no way a radiator will cause an intermittent problem. Push the motor hard enough on a hot enough day, and it will overheat every time - not just some of the time. Some other variable would have to change. Other than the thermostat or sensor, I'd think about maybe the belt tensioner - but I'm not buying your radiator answer that you haven't explained.
Have a nice day !

Message: either way guys, SDave did not leave enough info. if he has an '00 or later it couldbe either the aux cooling fan itself or relay or a sticky thermostat. could even be the fan slutch going out.
i too have never seen a radiator cause an intermittent problem as this.

Message: Currently running some Super Flush through the radiator and engine. I think it will help but I don't think it is the cause of the problem. I think the head is cracked particularly in the combustion chamber. I will let you know when I know more about it myself.
