Subject: oil and tuneups IP: Logged
Message: i was watchin a tv show yesturday where they took a ford and a chevy from around 1990 and tuned them up so they were close to stock(oil, new plugs, coolant)simple stuff, i thought i heard them say they changed the fuel filter, but they showed them changing the fuel pump, i might have heard wrong. i thought about changing the fuel filter in my 01 dakota, but the manual says u pretty much never need to replace it unless its contaminated or sumtins jammed, is this true or would replacing it be good just as part of maintanence once in a blue moon?
2nd questions is when is synthetic oil a good idea? i believe older engines need conventional oil, but when is synthetic oil a good idea? my dak has about 85k miles, can i switch to synthetic and for how long? oil change time is coming up and id like to use it if i can

Message: #1- the fuel filter is on the fuel pump inside the fuel tank. unless it becomes an issue i'd leave it alone.
#2 - i have an '00 QC @ 80k i switched from dino to sybthetic oil. noticed the engine seemed to run a little smoother and mileage went up about 1 mpg. no problems with doing that at all. good idea.

Message: thanks again daddio, i figured the fuel filter was fine since i couldnt find a replacement 1 at like autozone
and the oil, wasnt sure when the cut off for it was, like when its considered to late and pointless to do it then, didnt wanna pay a few bucks extra money for no reason, but it does last longer and if it runs a little better, thats enough for me

Message: I switched my 3.9 over to synthetic at 140k, but that was only 2000 miles ago. We'll see how it goes.
But for now it seems to be OK. It didn't blow up, or start leaking oil any faster than it used to. No real improvement, either, it runs about as smooth as ever. I like to tell myself it's running a little better/quieter/faster/more efficient/louder, depending on what I want that day, but who really knows.
We're supposed to continue changing it every 3k for a while, since the synthetic oil is supposedly slowly cleaning the old engine sludge out with its magic synthetic cleaning rays. For that reason I'm also using a premium oil filter. So in conclusion I'm now spending three times as much at every oil change, so it must be good.

Message: haha ya, i read you dont need to change it as often, but i would change it every 3k like you are doing to get the crap out and keep it fresh for awhile
i read somewhere once you switch to synth u shouldnt go back 2 conventional, i dont get why and i dont think it would matter, but thought i should mention it, tons of myths about synth so i dont pay attention 2 most of em
