Message: Does anyone know how to get a PCM for a 2000 Dodge Dakota 4.7 4x4 without paying full price at the dealer. Can I go to a wrecking yard or something? Thanks

Message: I believe he means car-part.com. I heard what "lookeyhere" posted brings you to a JC Whitney site, but never checked it. I got one for $80 at car-part.com.

Message: Both URLs take you to the same place - Car-Part. I wasn't clear on whether there was or was not an "s" in the site name.

Message: I had the same problem. My truck threw the p0601 code also! Dealer said it would cost around 710.00 I paid only $200.00. Anyways the website is http://www.autocomputerexchange.com/. Just make sure you tell them you have the 4.7 litre, and need it programed for that.

Because I got a warantee for the part thats why. I know that this is a common issue for these vehicles due to the location of the PCM. Plus the fact that the VIN is programed into it already so it's Plug and Play!

Message: The one I got from the boneyard was plug and play too - but I can't say for sure not if that would be true for all 4.7's. I didn't get a code due to the mismatch of VIN that is so common for the other engines. It would be interesting to hear if anyone running a boneyard PCM for a 4.7 found they had to have the VIN programmed. I do know one aplication where it could be a problem is when there is a factory alarm system. I don't believe this is a common issue for our Daks due to the location. I think it could be more accurate to say it is a problem for MOST vehicles due to the location. Most vehicles I've seen have the PCM under the hood; where it can be subjected to temperature extremes. There are also temperature extremes at other locations in vehicles, simply due to outdoor temperature variation. I'd never pay more than twice the price of something like this to get a warranty - I don't believe they are likely to continually fail. It's really only a small percentage of vehicles that have PCM failures; and I've never seen anything to suggest the failure rate in Dakotas is higher than average. Mine didn't fail; I bought it to run the truck for a few weeks while I was having the stock PCM flashed. This choice is up to the individual, of course.

Message: I'm happy that you payed less for you PCM truly. But one thing I ran into being the factory security system it would run fine for about 3-5 seconds then send a kill signal then shut the engine off. So not everything is the same. To each his own in those respects. I had great results with this company. I was just giving help to someone in need. For the record not everyone has a boneyard to pull parts from especially this vehicle. Which is why the internet for me was the next best thing. The way these were designed was horrible. I am in the Military and work on jet engines that create twice the amount of heat. It's a design flaw but again this is not a perfect world if it was nothing would break.

Message: I'm happy you found one to work with your security sytem - that would be an excellent reason to pay the extra amount. But everyone with internet access does have access to a boneyard - carpart.com. Actually many boneyards together online; that's where I got mine. We explained some of the things to look for to the original poster in another post (he had at least two posts on this, different forums). For anyone who missed that, 4.7 PCM should match year, tranny and emissions package at a minimum to be compatible.
