Subject: Power Steering on a 1998 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I just had my 98 dakota into the shop to get looked at. At slow speeds the steering was very stiff and then very loose while turing the wheel. The mechanic I took it to told me I had an internal leak in my rack-and-pinion steering. So, they replaced the rack and I picked it up this morning. As I pulled into work, I noticed it doing the exact same thing. Stiff and then loose at slow speeds.
I'm calling the mechanic to ask him what the deal is, but I'm not sure he diagnosed the correct problem the first time. Any ideas what might be going on? He did mention that my ball joints are going bad, might they be the problem?

Message: You may need a pump. I did mine not too long ago and noticed a difference, easier steering. I got an AutoZone pump. Don' tdo that. Mine makes noise now and it's only a few months old! Get a good one, rent the tool to change the pulley. It's easy!
Balljoints? Yess, that should be with every tune up or more often!
