Subject: Y pipe for the 4.7L?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2002 dakota quad cab, with a cold air intake and flowmaster cat back exaust. I was thinking about getting a larger y pipe and high flow cat put on, but i am not sure if it is worth it. I have the model that only has a single cat. Is it worth the horsepower/gas milage? I would think it would be because the stock y pipe is very small. Any advice i would appreciate.

Changing the y-pipe should make a bigger difference than what you've done so far. Some y-pipes are more restictive than others - I think it depends more on the vendor than the year. I've seen pictures of some that are much more restrictive than the one that came stock on mine. Not so sure about how much bang you'll see for the buck with the high flow cat though. That $$$ might be better spent on Superchips or cam swaps.

ok thanks, now is superchip better than the hypertech programmer? I know the price is higher, but is it really worth it? And do i have to run a lower temp thermostat with a programmer?

The v8 guys here seem to prefer the Superchips. I got my extra advance through a custom flash before Superchips was available. No need to run a lower temp thermostat.

Yeah my stock y-pipe wasn't smashed down like some of the pictures I had seen either. Mine's a 2003.
If it's not extremely smashed, then you will see NO GAINS by changing it.

I wish we could post pictures in the forum like the "good ol' days" :(

Check out the pics on my site for the Y-pipe. I got alot of gain in the 1/4 mile when I did my truck. I deleted all cats and modified the headers I had previously installed so it was a true 2.5 inch out of the headers. The best tuner is SCT hands down. I am a custom tuning dealer. We add alot more timing than the generic tunes you get from superchips and others. If you are in the north east come and see me!

The pipe on the website was from a friends 2000 4x4 I did, it had the pre cats you may have heard about. My 2000 2wd didnt have those. It would probably be around 850 in parts for a set of ceramic coated headers with the 2.5" v-band flanges on them and then 2.5" stainless pipe for the rest, ending up with a 3" v-band after the Y where it comes into one. That includes 3 v-band clamps and one extra flange to go on the rest of your exhaust. Then labor. This is all custom stuff, I'm not set up to do production work so it has to be on the actual vehicle. Are you in the north east?
