Subject: K&N, Airaid or Volant?... IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys!... I have a 99dakota 3.9L auto. and I've been thinking on getting an air intake system but I don't really know wich one it's the best that can give more hp/tq to my truck. I have a k&n filter on my factory air box. Does it really makes a big differense having the snorkel and the filter cone? Now. having this intake syst. on my truck while driving on a light or heavy rain. Does the water can get in to the engine?... Any ideas, advise or suggestions I will really apreciate it. You guys are the experts out there....Thanks

Message: They're all about the same. Unless you're running your truck on the edge, you'de never notice the differance between one and the other. Pick the one with the biggest element.

Message: Spending the same amount of money on a good
tune up with quality parts: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil, filters, cleaning the throtle body & etc.
will make more of a difference than any of the mentionned custom air intakes gizmos.

Message: Roberto,
Don't waste your money!
They're all Overpriced, alot of hype, and Little or no gains on a Real dyno test.
I've never seen anyone with a before and after dyno on a Dak, claim what K&N claims.
Overpriced, way overpriced for a little of nothing.

Mine's an allweather truck, and it doesn't seem to be an issue., I even removed the rubber flap for better air flow.
A while back (1990?) one of the magazines did a test on the 5.9 magnum engine. They used a variety of Dodge performance parts, and tested each one on the dyno.
Surprisingly, the only one that actually increased measurable power was the CAI. Shorty headers actually cost power. The perormance computer didn't change anything.

Message: Todd, have you ever seen anyone do a before and after dyno on a K&N fipk on a Dak ? I haven't, and I suspect that's the only reason you haven't seen those claims substantiated. K&N took much more time to release this for the 4.7, for example, than other intake manufacturers - so they seem more reputable than the others with their claims. They said they wouldn't release it until they could document a gain. I agree it seems overpriced for the small power gains at only the highest revs; which is the reason it isn't one of the mods on my truck - just not enough bang for the bucks.

Message: Kowalski,
No, actually I haven't seen an independent before and after on the K&N FIPK.
With my homebrew intake on mine, I actually took out my K&N drop in on my last dyno run, and it peaked at 301 RWTQ. A 1 ft/lb gain, but since no one including me would drive w/o their air cleaner, I usually don't mention that.
I didn't compare stock vs. homebrew, but I suspect there wouldn't be much difference, I should do it one day though.
Maybe they can get what they claim, then maybe my 'homebrew' does too.
HOmebrew vs K&N, same motor, same day, that would be interesting.
I only did the different MY 'stock' vs. Super Chips settings with different octanes, using virtually the same ambient conditions.
01 SLT QC, two tone paint,
OEM fender flares
Cab high Leer cap w/ double slider window,
Infinity sound, O/H computer
Tire and handling pack,
Trailer towing pack,
4.7 manual, 3.92 LSD, traction bars
HO cams,
HO intake,
Ported the stock 68mm TB,
Homebrew 'true' CAI, w/ K&N
No belt driven clutch or cooling fan
No third cat.
SuperChips Tuner
Max dyno, NO short belts, etc.

Message: That would be interesting. I think you'd be surprised - they put a lot more development and testing time into theirs. I'm surprised you think the one you just threw together with no testing would equal it.

It all in the physics, aerodynamics, etc.
I have a hard time believing that they put a bend just right, or have an exact length or tube before the filter that would equal, what is it they claim on a stock 4.7? 7 hp?
