I love my 4.7, revs quick, feels good. It's lighter and a little easier on gas (not by much). The 5.2 has tons of grunt and plenty of mods available. Plus you get a more than proven bulletproof engine. Drive both (with the same gears and cab) and pick which one feels best to you.
Good luck,
Jay

Message: Where do you live ? The newest 5.2 Dakotas are almost 10 years old. Here in the rust belt, that's about when we'll start seeing problems with rotten brake or fuel lines; and about anywhere that's when you'll start seeing more normal wear problems, cooloing system, wiring, etc. That's when I start looking to get out of a vehicle, not looking to get into one - but everyones threshold for those reliability issues is different. I'm nearing that point with my first year 4.7 myself; which has proven every bit as stone cold reliable as the old 5.2's reputation. Maybe better - no belly pan gasket problems with a 4.7.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Agreed Kowalski. Good point. I should clarify that I think the ENGINE is bulletproof (except for the $%#@ gaskets). At at least 8 years old, other things on the truck will start to fail. Plus I like the interiors of the 2001-ups alot better. (If anyone else cares about the interior.)

Message: i got a 99 5.2 4x4. and i love it. and yes i did the belly pan gasket. no prob. took about 4 hrs.
but if your looking for performance and got the money. then id go with the 5.2 way more mods available than a 4.7, cant even find a aftermarket cam for the 4.7s :(

There are tons of aftermarket cams available for the 4.7. check out KRC performance and others. Thats not to mention the H.O. cams.
There are not the massive amounts of aftermarket parts available, but there are a good amount of parts available for the 4.7 (tuners, shift kits, cams, TBs, headers, supechargers, etc).
The 4.7 is lighter (both overall and in rotating & reciprocating mass) than the 5.2 and is *slightly* better on fuel. Plus, the 4.7 sounds sweet under the hood when it revs (which it loves to do). Also, the 545rfe tranny behind the 4.7 will walk a 46re/h from the 5.2.
And dont get me wrong, I love the 318 (any mopar guy does) - I just think the 4.7 is an overall better motor.
My $.02

Message: didnt know about the cams on the 4.7
thanks for the info.
i would have to agree that the 4.7 is all around a better motor and it has newer technology on its side.
but i guess it comes down to preference. some like 1 more than the other.

Message: As stated before-it comes down to time. The 318 engine{and the truck it comes in)is almost 10 years old. Unless you find a low milage cherry, you need to move into the 21st century..

Message: "Can't find cams for the 4.7"???
I think KRC not only sells the HO version of the cams, but at least three other regrinds ranging from mild to wild!
The 318 is tried and true. Dependable, etc.
The nice things about the 4.7 that you will enjoy is a high stock rev limiter (about 6200 it seems), an auto tranny that will bark the tires with a simple reflash using a superchips, and no paper gaskets on the engine to EVER LEAK!
Just about everything on the engine is o-ringed. You can even reuse most of the old o-rings like if you change the coolant t-stat which can be done in 10 minutes flat! No gaskets to scrape on this engine.
