Performance can also be how long something, or a system lasts.

I have a 2001, QC, 4.7yadda, yadda,

I ordered it with the manual tranny, tire and handling pack, trailer towing pack, limited slip, etc. Until recently, I towed my 20ft catamaran sailboat weekly.

It has the stock 11inch rear drums, and the stock front discs.

It has all the original everything, orig. pads, rotors (never turned on lathe), fluids, shoes, drums, everything original.

It now has over 132,000 miles, and still stops great! Sports car stops-no. Adequate/safe stops, even with my family in my Quad Cab- YES.

Well if I were you I would change all the brake pads and the front rotors, it cant hurt and you and I both know they won't last forever. At least do the front pads at minimum, but since your in there slide off the old rotor and on a new one. 132,000 is a lot of stops, and if you ride around with your family all the time just to be safe CHANGE THEM.

CluCool,

You don't know me,

I do nearly all my own work on my Dak.

Why should I change anything, when the pads, rotors, etc. are still in their serviceable life? In other words, don't need it?

If it were a problem, they would have already been changed.

I bleed the brakes yesterday.

In doing so, I pretty much replaced the brake fluid. I did it myself, by opening the valve, putting a rubber hose on it, and putting the other end in a plastic bottle, so as the fluid came out, the end of the hose would be in fluid, and no air would leak back. ONe wheel at a time form farthest to closest to the master cylinder.

After over 6 years, with nothing ever done to me brakes, it still works about the same.

By using my parking brake every time I park, that keeps the 11inch drums adjusted, taking work off the front rotors. And the manual tranny helps too, downshifting to about 1500 rpms while stopping.

NOw I've got over 133,000 miles, and it still stops well.

That last post should have read:

Sorry for the typo, bled the brakes.

Don't just bleed them. With that many miles flush out all the fluid with new.

Todd, I hope you didn't pay for that tow package because it comes with 4 wheel disk brakes. At least my special ordered with the tow package 03 cc did. That's the only reason I ordered the tow package was for the 4 wheel disks!

oslarge,

I bought one of thelarger bottles of fluid. I DID replace all the fluid. I used a hose on the zerk fitting, and small container so air wouldn't get back in. I opened the farthest wheel first, and one at a time, did eachg wheel and worked back to the closest wheel. Worked great.

Tnjones,

Without trying to flame you, etc, the Dakota was NOT offered with rear discs in 2001, on any package, at all, period.
I ORDERED my truck, I should know.

And,,, if I'm not mistaken (probably am and will get flamed ;-) The 03 and 04's came with bigger front rotors and dual piston front calipers, which the earlier years didn't. Don't know about the 05 and later models.

Todd, why would say that if you don't have any complaints about your current disc/drum setup?

While I don't have any complaints about my original ('cept new fluid) brakes (all 4 wheels), after over 134,000miles,
I would think going to 4 wheel discs
is an 'upgrade'.

Just going to aftermarket discs and pads was an upgrade for my '00. The factory parts on mine were certainly nothing to brag about.

Sorry, I went back and checked my original order for the truck, either/or SLT package or Club Cab got me 4 wheel disks. According to my notes I ended up NOT getting the tow package because it was just a receiver and light connection.

Trailer Tow Group
4WD regular cab, Club Cab, Quad Cab $275
Class IV trailer-hitch receiver, 7-wire trailer harness, 4-wire adapter. Requires Heavy-Duty Service Group.

Tn,...

Uuhhh, Look up the 'Hevy Duty Service Group',
REQUIRED with the towing package.

Do you drive a manual tranny, like I do?, then the Transmission cooler is not needed, o/w, it's in the towing group.
What about the larger radiator? The larger Battery? The larger alternator?,etc., In 01, the 11inch rear drums.
huh?

I ordered the towing package on my 01 QC SLT,
'cause I tow things, AND, it comes with more than a receiver and wiring harness.

Incidentally, in 01, the Tire and Handling pack came with 8x16 inch alloy wheels, AND a rear sway bar.

While there are some differences, I know how TnJones feels. It's like they are double charging us for some stuff; as the larger battery and alternator are also in the AC package. But no break in price ordering both groups. And although I should have received the larger drums with my tow package, that's not the way they assembled the truck.

11" drums were standard on the '00 & '01 QC's. were they actually part of a tow package for CC's & RC's?

Well, after over 135,000 miles, I had to take out and grease the calper slide bolts on the drivers side.

Glad I did it before the wheel locked up altogether.

Still original brakes though! The pads still have alot of pad left!
