Subject: Stroker and Tranny Plans for 97 4x4 5-sp

I have a 1997 Extended-cab 4x4 with a 5.2 NV3500 5-speed. It has 3.55 gears with 33 inch BFGs and a 3 inch body lift. The first, second, and third gear syncros in my tranny are on their way out and as you could imagine, my truck is pretty slow and gets bad milege with the bad ratios. I plan to put in 4.10s to help, but I also would like more motor.

First I would like to address the engine. In early spring or summer I would like to stroke my engine or by a stroker block. I would like to build a reliable pump gas torque monster that starts early and signs off at around 4000-4500RPM. I've looked at the 390 and that looks really good, but I also found out that the 408 stroker can be internally balanced. Which motor do you think would meet my goals the best? I'm still going to use it as a daily driver in California where I will need to meet smog and would like as good of milege as possible with a torque set up.

Second I would like to address the tranny issue. I know a NV3500 would not handle the power. Mine isn't even handling the power my 5.2 is putting out right now. Because I have a 3 inch body lift, would the NV4500 fit without cutting the floor? If not, how much cutting would I need to do? Are there similar mounting spots, or would I have to make my own mounts?

Is there anything else that would now work with this set up? Thanks for you help.
