I have a 96 Dakota, 5.2 5spd, 4X4. It's time to either rebuild the engine or put in another. I do a lot of hauling, I usually pull cars 100 to 200 miles every few months. My friend has a 96 Ram 5.9 and a 98 5.9 I could buy. How big of a pain would it be to make them fit? I do have emissions where I live and cannot have a check engine light on, otherwise it automatically fails. Or am I stuck with 5.2, I have heard of making a 390 strocker out of a 5.2. Any suggestions?

otherwise it sounds like you are stuck with the 5.2

I'm pretty sure that you can use the '96 5.9, as long as you also get the computer that goes with it. Some people have to worry about their trans being compatible and strong enough to handle the added torque of the 5.9, but since you have a manual 4x4, you do not have to worry about such things (since the 4x4s got the nv3500 and there's no computer controlling the trans). Both the engine in your dak and the 5.9s are OBDII, so I do not think that the check engine light should come on. However, there may be a small difference between the '96 and '98 as far as sensors go, so I would bet that it would be safer to say that the '96 5.9 would work just fine. If I am wrong about any of this, then please, somebody should correct me. I have learned this info from doing exhaustive searches on this site and by asking alot of questions about pretty much the same thing that you are. If you spend some time searching on this site, you will find an abundance of info on this subject.

Oh, and I think that their external dimensions are very similar if not the same. Also, they both use the same mounts, fuel pumps, etc...so actually "making them fit" isn't much of an issue. I think that I read on here that you can make a 390 stroker out of the 5.2, and a 408 stroker out of the 5.9s. It would prbably be much cheaper just to put a 5.9 in, though. Hope I helped!

oh, almost forgot...you will need a new flywheel to use with the 5.9, due to the fact that they are balanced externally as opposed to the internal balance of the 5.2. I think summit has them, but you can find cheaper ones on either advance auto or autozone's websites.
