Unless it has been changed after the factory, My guess is 3.55 gearing but to be sure check inside the glove box, and read the sticker inside. If you think that it has been changed after the factory then you need to count driveshaft spins for one full tire rotation, and that is what your ratio is. Put some marks on the drive shaft and the tire and then get some one to help you out by lying down next to the truck. Three and a half spins and it's 3.55, almost 4 and it's 3.92, more than 4 and it's 4.10's, 4 and a half and you have 4.56's.
If you think they are not stock gears then I would hope for 4.10's, but 4.56's wouldn't be that bad either. It depends how much city driving you do compaired to highway, and your tire size too.

Good luck.

I have a 99 3.9l and I do mainly city driving, but of course I use it on the highways sometimes too.

What size gears would you recommend for me?

And correct me if I am wrong but if I change the gears this will make my truck go faster?

The different gear size will add torque?

Lower gearing (higher numerically) will add torque and make your truck quicker; but not usually faster.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Tire size plays a big factor in gears choices.
What size are you running on, any mods that have been done?
Yes, Kowalski is right, as usual:) Higher numerically will make you launch faster off the line, and bring your engine up to peak power faster. These are good for lot's of stop and go city driving, but could hurt your mileage on the highway.
Lower numerically will give you a higher top speed, if you remove your speed limiter (not really advised unless you want to kill yourself), but are usually better on the highway because your engine doesn't rev as high when your going 60-70mph, only if you have the right ratio of gears to tire size to available power.
Meaning that, going too low numerically on the highway, in a 4 cylinder with 33 inch tires will kill your available power and your mileage will suffer, big time.
Although I'll probaly get corrected by someone for goofing up somewhere, I'm pretty sure that all is correct as far as I know.
3.55 or 3.92 would probably be good enough for you unless you are going to the strip.

My 2 cents

Thanks for the reply. No I don't plan on making it a drag truck or anything crazy, just want something that will make it a little more fun to drive on the city streets and not kill me or my wallet on the highway.

I'm rockin my stock fifteens now, of course I have been planning for years to get a set of 20's. I have a small list of mods CAI, Headers, HighFlow cat, Exhaust, ASP crank pulleys, AIT sensor mod, for X-mas a superchip tuner and 1.7 Roller Rockers.

With that said you still recommend 3.92 for what I am after?

if you're going to 20's you might want to consider 4.10's. for instance if you now have 235/75/15's and you go to 315/55/20's you're going from a 28.9" tall tire to a 33.6" tall tire. that's about a 15% jump in size. 4.10's would get you back to where you are now.

No, I'd have to agree with Daddio, if your gonna go to 315's then I'd have to say that 4.10's or maybe even 4.56's for some extra get up and go would be a nice way to top off your list of mods. But I would surely go with 4.10's for a 33 inch tire with the V6.
Have fun!

How bad would it screw me up if I put in the 4.56's before I get the 20's on there?

Is it drivable?

Or is it more practical to get the rims and then when I can afford the gears get them second?

your hwy mpg will take a dump. you'll have plenty of get up and go off the line though. don't change them unless your absolutely sure your going to upsize those wheels later.
