Subject: Good Cold Air Intake

Message:
I'm looking at putting a descent C A Intake on a v6 3.9L. Where's the best place to get that online? I'm not looking for an expensive one, just something other than stock. What would be a descent brand to buy other than K&N, AFE, or Airaid.

i just put an AFE in my diesel
pro-guard 7
the K&Ns are junk for the diesels, they will not filter nearly fine enough, plugs up the injectors
so i dont see why they wouldnt let crap in to plug the injectors on a gas engine as well

1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

say wha

isitjustme? Hes talking about the myth of the K&N filers messing up the O2 censor, atleat I think..... Which is not true by the way. Hey man I have an AEM brute force air intake and its freakin awesome. It also comes with a throttle body spacer.

they do not filter down to a fine enough micron, the particles get into the engine and collect on the injector over time and get burnt onto the tip of the injector (on a diesel mind you) and eventually plug it up
on a MPI it may not be as much of an issue but on direct injection if can lead to issues.
i guess it wouldn't be an issue on MPI unless you got the intake hot enough that it built up like carbon does on the injector
which the 318s have a history of running really hot on the back 2 cylinders, they are always the ones to have issues.
at least, in my experience

Explained that way SuperBee, I do agree with you!

I was about to install a K&N drop-in filter
in my 4.7 when I took a look at it up to a light.
All those tiny 'holes' just can't be good,
so that K&N has remained in it's box ever since.

More 'potential' flow in one thing,
but more potential problems with small particles
entering your engine is the trade-off.

It's true about some excess oil contaminating MAF sensors, some vehicle manufacturers will void the warranty on emission related parts if an 'oiled type' air filter is installed.

I wonder how much of That K&N reputation is fact; or how much may just be fantasy because someone held one up to the light and maybe didn't like what they saw ? I've run K&N filters on my bikes for many years with no problems. Also, I've had one on my '00 4.7 Dak since the first filter change (I'm original owner). No problems with injectors or sensors of any kind. I wonder if some problems might be related to people over oiling the filters ?

From what I've read, where its the most noticeable is when doing an 'used oil analysis'.
Using a K&N will show a higher 'silica' or fine dirt percentage in your used motor oil creating extra fine abbrasives in your engine.

I think most K&N's are damaged by improper cleaning methods and then over-oiled.

Dirt bikes and ATV's use these types of foam filters from the factory
because paper ones would clog to fast (proof they filter better), these small engine aren't warrantied for too long and aren't expected to last for 100K miles before a rebuild.

I believe the combination of different material to impress people plus the high price to convince us they have to be better is overwhelming to many. the rest is high quality advertising paid for with the over payment of product.

And by the way,

you can build your own, for not much $, that will work fine.

My Home Brew True, CAI, has been fine for over 5 years now.

Take a look at a brand new K&N strait out
the box, pre-oiled at the factory and ready to install.

Hold it up to a light and you will see -hundreds- of small 'holes' where larger dust/dirt particles can pass thru.

By design, the dust is supposed to cling to the oil while passing thru the foam, too little oil wont stop de dust, too much will be sucked into the intake (not sensor friendly, read messages above).

In racing applications where 'every last CFM of air to reach 9000 rpms is important as long as the engine last just over the finish line'
this design might be worth it,

On a daily driver full of expesive electronics/sensors which you'd expect to last as long as possible without a rebuild, no thanks.

As someone mentionned above, just great marketing to the race fans
