Subject: cheap hp? IP: Logged
Message: In my quest to find misc. dakotas and mag engines, I have seen that many people who are selling these items say that the Air cond pump is frozen or whatever so they have just bypassed it with a shorter belt. So what I want to know is since I live in PA and air cond isn't needed year-round, couldn't I just bypass the a/c from mid fall until spring? Will that actually gain any hp, and will my a/c freeze up from doing this? If it will freeze during that long of a period, could I just do that for part of fall and part of spring?

Message: unless the heater control is in the defrost position,
the A/C compressor's clutch isn't
engaged,
remove the belt and check for yourself,
the A/C pulley will just spin freely, no HP loss at all.
cheap HP...remove un-needed weight,
tool boxes, spare part & junk,

Message: dakownr, you want to run the a/c comp at least once a week for a few minutes each time to circulate the refrigerant and oil to keep all the seals and parts lubricated.
as far as cheap hp, i follow this rule:
fast, cheap or reliable. pick 2 because you can't have all 3.

Message: Listen to daddio on this you can't have fast, cheap, and reliable all at the same time, most of the time anyway.
The only gain you would see from getting rid of your a/c is the weight you would loose if you took your compressor off along with all the lines and accumulator. There would be no power gains that would be worth the: 1) time to remove and reinstall the belt and 2) cost of the shorter belt. To me the 1/2 of a hp you will gain by doing this isn't worth the trouble on a street truck.

Message: thank you all for the advice and saving me from wasting valuable time and money! 'preciate it! Oh, and daddio, you said to run the a/c at least once/wk...should that be done year-round, or would that be unnecessary (since I'm obviously gonna keep the belt on)?

Message: if i'm not mistaken, the only time the a/c comp will be completely OFF is when you set the control to vent position. all others will cycle the a/c. so if you use any of those positions you're running the a/c comp.

Message: the AC compressor only cycles when the vent control
is set in a -windshield defrost- position.
that usually means both the 'floor & defrost blend' and 'defrost' positions on most US cars and trucks.

Message: nope, you are right to an extent. later years have a separate button/switch to turn the a/c comp on. my '00 doesn't have that. so in may case the a/c comp does not cycle in only the vent/fresh air setting. it cycles in all others. don't know what year they starting usinig that switch.

Message: My 2002 dak has the A/C switch. I can turn off the A/C to utilize the vent system, but when I turn it to any defrost setting, the A/C light comes back on and cannot be shut off.
So maybe they started the switch in 01 or 02.

Message: I was under the impression that my '00 AC cycled as "nope" claims too. Why would it need a separate button to work like that ? Couldn't it be tied in to the defrost switch ? The custom flash I got says it cuts out the AC on wide open throttle, so this should be controlable through the PCM. That flash was originally only available for the '00 4.7; but I've heard the Leach flash will work on '01 4.7s as well since.

Message: Kowalski, my statement was not totally correct. my '00 QC does not have the separate button to turn on the a/c comp. the a/c comp will cycle on ALL settings BUT the VENT and FLOOR positions.
it came like this from the factory as, i thought, all 97-00 daks did. i think they added the a/c comp on-off button in '01 was the interior was redone.

Message: I have an '01. It has the A/C on/off button. My A/C cycles in Defrost even if the button has not been actuated. The little A/C button light does not come on automatically when switched to defrost, but it definitely does cycle. The A/C dehumidifies the air, whether hot or cold, therefore defrosting/defogging your windshield very fast.
