Message: I was curious as to what other 318 are getting for gas milage. I seem to be getting extra poor MPG. Also wondering what can cause a drop in efficiency. Front O2 already changed. thanks, Jgreen3d

Message: a lot of things affect mileage. tire inflation and alignment, O2 sensor and driving habits would be my top 3. if you bought a cheapo O2 sensor it may not be reading as it should.
what kind of mileage are you getting?

Message: not exactly sure what my milage is at the moment but I seem to go through an 1/8 of a tank every time I drive across town. I dont expect it to be great but it seems to have gotten worse in the last 3 weeks.

Message: that's no way to check your mileage. you need to fill up, run til you need fuel, fillup again and divide miles driven by gallons used. otherwise your just guessing.
about the only thing i can think of to cause a quick decrease in mileage is a bad O2 sensor. maybe a bad engine temp sensor too.

Message: I heard of the Plenum gaskets leaking on those old Mamgnum engines, causes poorer MPG.

Message: ive been looking for a plenum leak because on an idle wavering but the only way I know to check is to look through the throttle body. There is no oil collecting in the plenum.

Message: i found this on an old post:
Pull the hose to the PCV valve and plug the valve and the hose. Pull the hose from the valve cover to the air hat on the throttle body and check for vacuum at the hose. If any vacuum then probably a blown plenum gasket

Message: A leaking intake gasket will show up as a low vacuum on a gauge. Just hook up a simple vacuum gauge to the vacuum port on the manifold and read its running results.

Message: 19 highway/ ~15.8 city here
That is NOT with the overhead computer either. I calculate my MPG with every fillup and write it on the gas receipt with the miles on that tank.
1999 4x4 Club Cab, 5.2 liter engine, 5 speed manual, 3.55 gears and 31x10.50r15 tires.
Flowmaster muffler, Hughes stage 1 beer barrel intake and an open style air cleaner.
For those that use the overhead computer for your gas mileage, I reset it with every fillup. Like 20 percent of the time, it might be within .2 miles per gallon of the actual number, but most of the time it is way beyond that.

Message: An older way to check for a manifold leak is to squirt carb cleaner around the base/gasket. You will hear the engine speed change when the cleaner is sucked thru the break making the mixture richer. Be careful as that stuff is very volatile.
You also get a cleaner engine.
This works on hoses and fittings too.
