Message: The 4X4 will hurt, but you should be able to easily pull 20 hwy with a 5-speed, auto and youre prolly looking to get 17. (My guesses) I previously owned a 2wd 2000 RC 5-Speed 3.9 V6. With a few mods i was getting a solid 19-22 mpg. 18 in the winter would be a bad tank.
Food for thought - I just bought a 2003 QC 4WD 4.7 auto (I miss the clutch), and it gets 15 city and 19 hwy with a superchips. Filling that thing up on $3 gas is not fun, but driving it is.
Another thought - the 3.9 mated with the 42RE Automatic is a DOG! esp with 4wd. Also, A friend of mine has a 99 5.2 CC 4WD Auto (46RE), with an aftermarket TB, Intake, Superchips and 1.7 Rollerrockers, hes getting 17-21mpg. And it was a beast to drive.
Good luck with your decision (or truck if you already bought it)!

Message: Well, I ordered my DAk, in 01, a Quad Cab, 4.7, manual tranny, yadda, yadda.
After reading on here for years, Don't get the V6, in 01, with a Quad Cab.

Message: I have to agree with TexasTodd on this. Like I said, the 3.9 with the auto is a dog, and add the extra weight of a QC, and you'll probably feel like youre driving a school bus, only slower. If youre looking at a truck with that many miles, I would suggest the 4.7 / 5-speed manual combo for that truck (good luck finding one though - I think there were some for sale in KY and WV a few months ago when I was looking). You'll get a solid 19/19 mpg, plus plenty of power.
As for recalls, Im only aware of 3 for my old 2000 dak. One involved the rear brake line (cant remember exaclty what it was), another the OBD-II wouldnt detect catalytic converter failure (I didnt get that one fixed obviously), and the infamous ball joint recall.
Good luck!

Message: I have a 2000 4.7 45rfe auto trans 4x4 QC. I get a steady 18 mpg city 22 mpg highway. All i have replaced with an aftermarket part is the airfilter. I have about 170,000 miles on it and still stomp the hell out of most of my competitors at the local mud bog on the flat track I wouldn't own a Dakota with anything but the 4.7!!!!
