Subject: Tailgate Shaffing!? IP: Logged
Message: The past month I have been hauling around ladders in my truck with my tailgate down in order for them be able to fit. And within the past few weeks of doing this I have noticed that I guess in combination of the weight of the ladder and the tailgate bouncing up and down, It has caused huge gouge lines on the backside of my tailgate in my paint! from the plastic step on the bumper! Has anyone else had this problem? This is past month has been the first time since I have had my truck (since new) that I have done significant hauling of things around with the tailgate down.
I don't think that this because of mis engineering on behalf of Dodge, but because of some shi*y body work performed a couple times on the rear end of my truck by "quality" bodyshops; and I use the term loosely. I am just wondering if anyone else out there has ever had this issue?

Message: I couldn't figure out what "shaffing" was - thought it was a wigger term - until I read the post and realized you mean "CHAFING".
Sounds like you had bad body work. My tailgate clears the chrome bumper no problem, even with weight on it.

Message: Did the same thing to mine. Found that the bumper had been shifted up a bit. (Must have snagged it on an embankment.) Did a readjustment and it clears nicely.

Message: Had EXACTLY the same thing happen to me before, I was driving around with the tailgate down for some reason I forget and when I closed it I found rub marks in the clear coat. I actually gave one, sharp, quick downward shove of the bumper and it moved down an inch or so and everything cleared perfectly after that. Like you, mine was most likely attributable to shoddy work remounting the bumper after past repairs. Thanks for reminding me, it's in the shop for it's most recent rear end collision and I have to remember to check for tailgate clearance when I go to pick it up.

Message: The long chassis, long bed in my case, has a lot of overhang and, especially loaded, can easily bottom out the bumper coming out a driveway. Three big bolts on each side and you can adjust your bumper back to where you want it.

Message: Hey Dictionary, lol on the "wigger term". Ya, I sorta thought I was a bit off on that one. It is Definitely a result from very sh*tty body work. I am going to have to try and re adjust it as Shatto suggested and find some way of touching up all the huge scratch/gouges it has left on the paint.
Shatto: I took a look behind the bumper and I see the 3 bolts on each side you mentioned, but how do you go about adjusting it? It looks as if the bumper can only be in one fixed position?? Do you have a Gen 2 Dakota?
