Subject: are they relly magnums IP: Logged
Message: hey guys i was just curious. is the new 5.7 6.1 and the 4.7 relly a magnumn engine? i know that "magnum" is the design of the cylinder head but are those new engines relly a magnum? or have a magnum head? or did they just keep the name and its just like a next gen thing?

Message: "Magnum" has been used by mopar for other meanings than the cylinder head. You are probably thinking that because the most recent 5.2 and 5.9 designs are LA Magnum motors - with the biggest (but not only) differences from the earlier "A" motors being the heads. The 4.7, 5.7, and 6.1 are also magnum motors, but are not of the LA design. I believe the term magnum also has seen duty on some of the old "B" engines with a hotter state of tune.

Message: They older engines were dubbed "Commando." The high performance models of Dodge and Plymouth had V8 Commando emblems similar in design to the current V8 Magnum emblems seen on gen I-III dakotas.

Message: Well, some were dubbed "commando", while others were definitely dubbed magnum. The 440 magnum was introduced in '67 as the base motor for some of the R/T packages (there was also 440 sixpak, and 426 hemi as options for R/T). Among other differences, it was known for better breathing heads than the other 440's. In '68, the 383 magnum was introduced - with a 4 barrel carb, that made more power than the 2 barrel carb 383's. Just a couple of examples.

Message: A little more history for some of you. Did some more research on this - looks like the commando designation was dropped when they came up with the magnum designation in '67. They were both distinguished from the standard motors of the same displacement by having more power. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Message: Yep, that would be the "older engines" to which I was referring. I think the Commando tag goes back to the early 50's.

Message: Scott, you might want to double check that. I was thinking I'd heard Commando used more for Plymouth myself, until I looked it up. I found what I posted - Comando was used for more than just Plymouth; and dropped the same time they started using Magnum, which replaced it in '67. I found examples of Dodge Commandos, and Plymouth Magnums. But hey - look it up yourself if you need further convincing.

Message: Mopar Performance has even borrowed these names for their aftermarket parts, i.e., the 360 Commando crate engine, which was a hot 360LA, sold in the 1990's, then replaced by a slightly hotter 360 Magnum crate engine. Probably safe to say, in general, certain terms are more closely associated with certain makes, but not exclusively.

Message: I seem to recall that the Jeep 6 Cylinder engine of the 1960's was a Commando.
