Subject: charging system question IP: Logged
Message: I have an 89? (10/88) dakota with the 2.5 engine. My question is... The battery is not being charged and I heard that the charging system is controlled by an engine control unit (a brain) for 89 where it wasn't in 88... Is this true? I'm trying to confirm that it is true before I dish out money for the whole brain. I also understand they don't make the brain anymore? A reconditioned one seems to be the only option here where I live. Any information would be appreciated.
Notes: I changed the alternator and starter already, and it is a fuel injection carb.

Message: I do not own one old as yours and have no books on yours. However, I see no reason what so ever any parts store can tell you if yours is controlled by a regulator or the PCM. Dodge dealer is another option for the correct information. In the event your sitting on the border and could be either way. be sure you have the numbers off the plate on your drivers door jam tag.

Message: You could use an external regulator, if you would know how. I could explain it, but it wouldn't be a simple explanation - unless you know what you are doing.

Message: checking all battery connections and load testing the battery would be my fist priority. does the battery light stay on or something? why would you think it's the altenator?

Message: Thx for the quick reply everyone!!
I replaced the battery as well, yes.
It was the dealership that told me the Engine Control Center (brain) was what regulated the charging/voltage system. I was told that it is possible to use a GM alt. and bypass the brain. But i'm not sure if i'd be able to do that myself or not. I'm not a mechanic but I do know a little and i'd rather do things myself than to have a shop do it, provided I have the tools and time. I just want to make sure the dealership isn't giving me some BS, which is why I was wanting to make sure my year truck required the brain for charging rather than the voltage regulator you find on most firewalls.
I guess i'll take the old unit in and see if they can test it to make sure it is the brain.
