Hey, I have a '98 Dakota 5.2 2wd. I bought a set of stainless steel headers that appear to be Japanese/Chinese made. I had to file down the flange to allow for changing the spark plug without removing the header. Then I noticed the flange is 1-1/2" too far forward and the header is so close to the upper control arm bushing that it will melt it. My guess is that these are for the 96 style Dakota and not the '98 style.
Sooooo, I bought a set of Pacesetters for the '98 and have the same clearance problem for the upper control arm bushing and the flange is also too far forward to mount to the stock "Y" pipe. The flange is also damn near touching the oil filter.
Now, my question it, what header fits the '98 Dakota with a 5.2L properly where clearance is not an issue?

Are they long-tube or short-tube headers? If they are short-tube, I am pretty sure that '96 and up are the same.

They must be shorties.
No long tube are available for dakotas 5.2L
Try Gibson, JBA headers or Mopar performance headers.
Try calling Summit. They have good technical assistance that can help with a match.

The second set are from Summit, they are their brand not Pacesetters like I thought. There was a Pacesetter book that came with them and show a pair exactly like the first set I bought. They are shorty headers. I know Gibsons look the same.

I think that the 5.2 headers are for a Ram, hence the clearance issues. The headers they carry are for up to a 96' Dakota.
But you don't have to take my word for it.
