I have the Hypertech progammer. You can set it for 87 or 93 octane.I think they say run a colder thermostat when running in the 93 mode.
even in 87 mode I have to run 89 so it dosent ping.
How do you like the Superchips programmer?

Message: You don't have to. But - like he said - keeping the heads cooler will help prevent detonation.
I have a 89 (mid grade) tune on my 5.9 from Hypertech. With the stock thermostat I would get some pinging. Especially when towing on a hot day. If I was going to tow, I had to use premium.
I switched to a 180* stat, and added a surfactent. Pinging went away. During the winter, I use low grade fuel. In the summer and while towing, I use mid grade.
I use a high flow Mr. Gasket stat, bought from Summit Racing. I drill a 1/4" hole in it to help with burping.
