Subject: Installing Cat Back in 3.9 IP: Logged
Message: How difficult is it to install a Cat back, such as a Gibson on a stock 3.9? I looked at the stock system and it looks like its all welded in place. Do you cut the pipe just after the CAT? How hard is it to twist off the hanger nuts after a couple years of running in the ice and snow up here in New England? Can a "regular guy" with awrench and a hacksaw do the job or do I need to take it to a shop. TIA

Message: BTS,
I installed a Gibson Cat Back SS single side on a '01 QC. Installation wasn't that bad. Follow the direction from Gibson. I cut the pipe behind the muffler and loosen the clamps in front of the muffler. Here I made a mistake and cut both the cat pipe and the muffler pipe right next to but in front of the clamp. This left me with about 1 1/4 - 1/1/2 inches to clamp on the Gibson tube. I read that you could either heat the muffler pipe red hot and pull from the muffler or cut length wise with a dremel, slits along the muffler pipe (not the cat pipe)and with a cold chisel, expand the muffler pipe and yank of the muffler. This will leave about 2-2 1/2 inches to install the gison head tube. I couldn't push the gibson head tube further up the cat pipe because there is a button to orient the muffler. You'll see a slot on the Gibson head tube.
The hangers came off the rubber bushings fairly easy. The clamp nuts should be drenched or soaked over night in WD40 or just break the nuts. Gibson gives you all new clamps. I did everything in about 1.5 - 2 hours. The biggest problem was yanking off the muffler. Good luck.

Message: I installed a Dynomax 3" catback and it was the exact instructions. I found that a grinding tool worked a quit a bit better than a dremel especially on the thick exhaust pipes. I later went to a muffler shop and had them weld the tubes rather than run around with the clamps.
00 QC, V6, Airaid intake, MSD 6A w/ MSD 8.5mm wires, JBA headers, Dynomax 3" catback
PS
My truck on catback exhaust alone ran 17.3sec last winter. Stock was 18.4sec
