lets see..

factor in:

reaction times,
traction / tire pressure / weight transfer,
engine power / torque curve,
gear ratio / rev limiter settings,
vehicle weight / rolling and wind resistance,

finally.. just follow 'bench racer's ' comments!

Careful there dude. I've run the quarter with my OD off and it slowed me down. Leave it on, because if your flooring it the whole way you will never hit OD anyway.

When you have the OD off, your computer thinks your towing so, for reasons I can't explain, it will slow you down @ the top end.

But if ya doubt it go ahead and try it. I have been wrong before.

Unless he has done some extensive modifications you should own him. He weighs a lot more than you.

1hotkadota, I think you are correct. I notice when I turn the OD off, it locks the converter in 3rd gear even under harder throttle!
If you leave it alone I think the converter stays unlocked uintil you let off of the throttle.

At least on our electronic tranny with the 4.7

Before I put the lower gears in my truck mine was faster through the 1/4 with the OD off. I think it was for the same reason that GraphiteDak just said it locked the torque converter in earlier and kept the motor in its powerband better. If I try that now it will be slower thanks to the 4.56 gears, she is at about 6300 at the end of the 1/4 with the od off now.

My 4.56 gears sure help out of the hole. But who knows at higher speeds.

I did drop almost 5 tenths in the 1/4 when I first did mine

I've never really tested the performance with o/d on and off. But I do know that with O/D off, instead of downshifting so easily to 2nd, it seems to just bog down in 3rd since the converter's locked.
This is on my 5.2/44RE.

Yup. And when it upshifts to 3rd gear, it bogs the RPM's down a little more.

Look at that video compilation I posted on another thread here.

At the end are two races with Rammer's 5.2 truck. He had the OD off. And listen to it when it goes to 3rd gear! I'd swear he was letting off of the gas but it's converter locking in 3rd gear!

Holy bat terds!!!!! I run my 4.7 at the mud bog with the auto tranny. I have never tried turning the O/D off to see how it effects my time!! You now have me wondering if I would turn a better time with it off or on. Hmmmmmmm.........
Oh, by the way, your 4.7 should eat your buddy's truck and spit it out if it is running good. None of the Dakota engines run like the 4.7. Ask any Dodge tech, they will tell you the truck to have is the standard cab 4.7 Dakota. They like them better than other Dodge truck. Except the SRT 10, of course. Go eat the 5.2 and let us now how bad you do it by!!

and just wondering Graphite, what do u run in the quarter?? it seems like you've done quite a bit to ur truck, even though its purdy heavy it seems like it should be one of the quicker 4.7s out there

Graph's truck is very fast for a portly QC. When I raced him, he always took me off the line. I had to wait to catch him in the long run, but he always started like 2 truck lengths ahead of me till about 50 or 60. This was all before he changed gears too. So now he might be able to beat me in the 1/4. (god I hope not though) :)

With all that said, I can beat the Chrysler 300's and Chargers with the Hemi to 60mph. So that might tell you just where Graph is at. But they tend to catch me after that. Just wait till my turbo goes on...

Nah, this was before his 4.56's. At the time, he had the Superchips program, I didn't. This was a couple of years ago.

Now that I have the Superchips, my take off is much improved.
My only problem is that I have to run 91 octane in my truck on the 87 performance setting. When I ran the 91 performance setting, my truck was pinging like crazy. I can't seem to figure out why the 91 setting is giving me so much pinging. Any ideas?

Yeah, that might help. Sorry dude.

2002 RC 4.7L, 4spd auto, 3.55 open diff, HO cams, custom tuned intake and exhaust(although they are both crappy homebrews). Uh...thats about it. I only run a 15.5 @89mph in the 1/4(@100 degrees), it's not like I'm all that fast. I'd be alot faster without that damn ticking or pinging.

I did do something cool to my truck this weekend.
You know those corners of our headlights that have no bullb in them? Well this weekend I drilled a hole and put an LED light in there that I connected to the turn signals. Now I have an extra light blinking when I make a turn. Looks pretty good too.

my 4.7L at the 1/8 mile track
IP: Logged

Message:
alright I finally took my truck to the race track a local 1/8 mile in Charleston Illinois Coles County Raceway. my best time was a 10.3 seconds 69.23 mph with over drive off i ran 6 times everytime i ran with overdrive on i ran 67mph everytime od off i ran 69. i won two times that night it was a blast. now i know i could run low 9s if i just had some better traction maybe posi or a locker and some traction bars. but for a bone stock 4.7L i didnt think that was to shabby all i have done in an intake and a straight pipe. its got 3.55 gears in it and i notice i start catch up to people at the end of the track usually like the last 60ft or so i think some gears would help but i'm not gonna mess with it i am puttin it in the paper today for sale. thought i'd drop a post with the results
