Message: I just put in my 180 thermostat. Install on that went good. But I will never ever ever flush the radiator myself again. Took my a full to do that. Going to the shop next time.
Is there any real hp benefit of putting in a 180 thermostat?

Message: Ok. So here's how I see it.
You put in a 180 degree t-stat, and NOW you're asking if there are any benefits?

Message: a 180* thermostat *may*:
-give you less MPG (a hotter engine is more efficient, up to a certain point)
-operate outside of your engine's computer settings
-less heat from your cab heater in winter time
(15* is a big difference when it's below freezing)
a 180* t-stat is often a band-aid cure for
insufficient cooling capacity (radiator size versus power produced or blocked/defective components)
no power to be gained by installing one

Message: I like Waynes comment the best!
Reason Im asking is because I didnt really do alot of research as far as actual benefits of the thermostat. I knew it wouldnt hurt anything to change from a 195 to 180. As far as the 160 Ive read a couple cons about that so I figured Id just go with the 180. Thanks Little Bart for your comment thats really the first cons Ive heard about the 180 tstat. Well I appreciate all the comments and if anything crazy happens Ill keep you guys posted.

Message: A hotter running engine is a bit cleaner, that's the whole reason.
The popular theory is that a lower coolant temp will also give you a cooler intake charge. Whioch should give you a little more power. However, nobody has tested this theory to see if it's true.
In a stock truck, it seems to be a mixed bag. Some people (like me) tried it and got terrible results. Some people tried it and got good results.
However, if you use a tuner like Jet or Hypertech, the 180* thermostat is recommended. The lower coolant temps keep the heads cooler. That helps to prevent detonation with the more agressive timing curves.
YMMV.

Under any conditions? Then how the H*ll are you going to answer his questions?
A Jet chip? LOL
Maybe schizo can start a new thread, with the engine this went in first, and maybe some mods, if any, etc.
