Subject: Advice for moderate 5.9 mods?
IP: Logged

Message:
Just got a "new" 2000 4wd auto with 5.9. Been away from mother mopar a few years, but just had to come back. (They didn't have any decent rear drive hot rod cars for so long!!)

Anyway, now on a steep learning curve. I've found Hughes engines and their cams and intake mods.
Just read about KRS and Socal on this site.

Just looking for better mid range, not caring about over 5500 rpm.

Any advice from experience on cams, exhaust, barrell type intake mods (without going to like a conventional dual plane type, rockers, etc?

Oh, and shift kits?
I don't even know for sure yet exactly what trans I've got in it. What's a good moderate shift kit just to firm things up a resonable amount and maybe up the shift points some under heavy throttle?

Thanks for any advice!

You may recall that the LA 318 had a miserably small cam and the 360 was only slightly better. On the Magnum front, it's reversed. The 360 specs out like the 360LA (.410" gross) while the 318 has .432" gross valve lift. Any cheapo OEM 318 Magnum cam will help and uses the same springs as the 360's slightly milder cam. However, for all that work, I'd go with something like the CompCams 20-622-9:HYDRAULIC ROLLER. Remember to look at any cam you consider and figure all specs based on a 1.6:1 ratio, not the 1.52:1 ratio of the LA's.
The stock intake is pretty good through about 4500rpm. Mods are aimed at the rpm range you're not interested in. The M1 is definitely aimed at upper rpm power. A good free-flowing exhaust, maybe a bigger throttle body if you're up for that cost, but you can decide on that after everything else has been done.
On tranny kits, TransGo, Superior, and Fairbanks all market multi-stage kits. From what you've said, Stage 1 will do it. Also, remember that they still have the throttle kickdown and it can be adjusted just like the old days....one way softens the shifts and lowers the rpm, opposite way extends the rpm's upward and firms the shift action.

the stock intake should do what you want. you may want to port match it and clean it up a bit around the injector bosses and such. you could also go for Hughes plenum replacement kit so you don't have to worry about that plenum gskt anymore.

if i'm not mistaken, you should have the 46RE trans.
