hey guys... it has come to my attention that my 318 is getting up there in mileage (161000+) and i was looking around at swapping the motor... im looking to put a 360 in i found one fairly cheap with only 70000mi... also i want to put either a 4 or 5 speed tranny on at the same time. while all of this is going on ive also been thinking about trashing my stock front suspension and was thinking mayb jeep front ends? possibly out of a cherokee or something. hasa anyone looked into that?

My DAK >>> 97 4x4 5.2l v-8 ext cab

Just put the 360 in, it's the same weight as the 318.
My 318 has 163 on it and runs fine, lotsa power and don't plan on changing it out!

Do the 5-speed, make sure the 360 Magnum has a flywheel for the same.

A Cherokee is a lighter duty unibody vehicle than your full frame Dakota, so I'm wondering why you are considering that for a front end. Have you heard of anyone doing this for some reason ?

Also the jeep front axle you are considering is only a dana 30 smaller than the dana 35 you have now. To me thats a lot of work for a smaller axle (even if it is a solid axle) that you will be putting in front of a bigger motor and a five speed. If you do all of the stuff you planned you will be breaking front axle u-joints on a regular basis. Now if you could get your hands on the bigger dana 44 out of a Jeep, Dodge, Chevy, Ford, International, and any thing else that axle came in you will be alright, as they are already in front of 360s, 350s, 351s, and other full size truck motors.

having a jeep cherokee ill let you know not to get the dana 30. first off im guessing the reason you want that axle it so you have a solid front axle correct. thats why i would do it. what your ganna want to do it find an old school bronco. they are the same width and suspension as the jeep dana 30 but its a dana 44. thats the most common thing to do for a jeep. by the way, the dana 30 has better street credit than the 35 dose. and how could be have a dana 35 in the front if its independent? woulnt it have to be solid?

i think its badass that your doin this swap. let me know if you need anymore help.

If your 318 has had reasonable care with regular oil changes, it should still be in great shape. This is assuming you never pounded it to death. Buy what you want and garage it till you really do need an engine or trany. Then do your project.

Thanks for the input so fast! Well i didnt look into the jeep thing so it was just an idea... ill look into the bronco axle but i thought that they were a little wider and would have to be trimmed... mayb the front axle out of a jeep grand cherokee with teh 360 already? i will have to look further into that. My 318 isnt running bad but it is for personal preferance that i want to do the swap. I have research to do and i will have to price things out but im looking to have this done b4 winter is over if all goes well :D

thanks again

ALL jeeps have a dana 30 front axle besides the new rubicons. they have dana 44s but its still dana 30 shafts and what not. if you get an early bronco it will be the same if not narrower. go to a junk yard and start measuin

clint282cc the front axles on 97-99 4x4 dakotas used dana 35 centersections with ifs axleshafts and tubes. Same thing with the twin i-beam ford 4x4 trucks, they used a dana 44 centersection for their ifs system.
