Subject: Removing o2 sensors??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an '03 with the 4.7 and it has a single cat on it (factory). I was talking to a local mechanic (who happens to be a dodge fan) about true duals. He told me that he removed the rear o2 sensor from his exhaust system (left the sensor plugged in, but not in the pipe, it's just tied up out of the way) and he has no engine light on, and the air/fuel mix is still perfect. So today I did the same and sure enough, no engine light, but I have yet to test the air/fuel mix ratio. I would like true duals as there are no emitions tests here, and dual cats are hard to fit as well as expensive.
Anyone ever heard of, or done this before??
Or will I be headed for future problems?

The second O2 sensor doesn't affect A/F ratio. There's no magic pill here. You still have to have the primary O2 sensor functioning.

Your local mechanic is breaking federal law and risking his business and a big fine. It's illegal to tamper with or disable any emissions control, regardless of whether your state tests. Also, if you sell the truck someday you will likely have to pay to have it restored - that's the law in MA.

The downstream sensor expects to see a leaner mixture than the upstream. Hanging it outside the exhaust may do that, but it defeats the purpose of warning you that your cat has failed.

Just keep the sensors, put high-flow cats on and it will perform fine.
