I have a 99 5.2 ext cab. With 79k mi.When I floor it from a dead stop it leaves maby a5 foot mark.It has the 3:55 open diff.I see a lot of guys saying their stock 5.2 will smoke the tires.
My dads would smoke the tires.Whats up with my truck?

Could be the gearing .Most come with 3,55 gearing but there are alot out there with the 3,92 gearing option. But anyhow is that what you got the truck for is to light them up?It could be worse it could be broke or runnin like crap and having to sink money into it just to keep it going. My personal opinion.BUt to answer your question it is prob the gearing.

yea. new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, air filter and an oil chanage. my 3.9 can smoke my one tire all day, so you should definately be able to. if all that doesnt work, then you might have a problem.

I'v only had the truck for a couple of months.
Sometimes it feels stronger than others.
I want to make it a strong truck.Im going to install headers in January.

Check your cap and rotor button. My wifes 99 Durango ran great when we got it but lacked the power of my Dakota (both 5.2). I changed the cap and rotor and the difference was night and day. Also, are you sure your only spinning 1 wheel? My Dakota would sometimes try to spin both tires even with the open diff.

Mike

the first thing I am curious about is what altitude you live in.

At 1000 ft it should smoke them.
Get much above 5000 ft and you will lose a lot of power. Night and day diff when it comes to spinning tires.

You could have the death flash. There would be a stick under your hood or on the computer that read something like "authorized software upgrade"

My dak has the same flash and its dead under 3k rpm. Mine will barely spin them from a dead stop off idle...but as soon as it hits 3k, bam theres goes the rev limter, shifts to second..bangs the rev limiter again. Of course when i stall it at the track its doesnt wanna hook up AT ALL.

Oh well...needs more low end grunt AND traction.

There was one time the truck took off and spun the tires hard all the way through first. But I cant get it to do it again.

I wished my R/T wouldnt spin but it wont stop.Mabe you ought to sell it and buy a bad ass Toyota then maybe you could change brands of rice HA HA.Mabe you ought to call Marty at KRC and see what he has to say.Or I have a 5.9 you could put in it,and then you would be trying to find a way to stop it from spinning. Be good and we will talk later. Love POPS

Well, a 318 in descent shape should be able to spin that 3.55 OPEN diff especially if you are at lower altitude.

My 4.7 would ROAST that 3.55 open in my QuadCab 4X4 from a dead stop no power braking. My bro in laws 2000 318 Ram 1500 would spin his too. The 4.7, believe it or not, always seemed to have more initial response (JERK if you) will from a dead stop. With my 4.56 LSD gears it will STILL spin them both, but not forever like the open diff unless I powerbrake first.

Do a search for the TPS mod here. Mine never made a difference and was ok. But I hear that sometimes they don't set that too good from the factory and can cause a truck to stumble form the get go.

Same here. A fix would be nice. Are you sure that's just not how the motor is set up? Maybe at 3k it just hits a torque curve and is not due to the computer.

Good point - not all the software upgrades are what we call the "death flash" - just those that retarded ignition timing; and that would continue above 3k.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I know that mine does not really spin unless I do clutch drops. I am not too worried though. It accelerates hard, so who cares.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one

the mopar perf pcm won't have the "death flash". the death flash was given to truck owners that complained about pinging when using 87 octane. it basically pulled some timing back to avoid pinging with crappy gas and was a quick fix to keep the consumers happy.
