sooo i was debating removing the clutch fan and getting a flexalite...but i dont know how to choose a flexalite...and then another problem.
there are 4 screws holding the clutch fan on...and i got them all but one cuz it got stripped relly bad.. and that fan is blocking everything and my arms are all cut up and im pissed. but anyways how can i get that fan off with a stripped screw? is it ok to undo that giant nut holding on the whole fan? its the one coming off the pulley...about 300mm

what yr is your truck? my'00 just had the big nut and the pulley is pressed on the waterpump.

if you turn the engine a little you can probably get that bolt you're talking about to where it would be easier to get to.

Why would you think it is striped? you took 3 out so this says you know whick direction to turn them. bolts strip turning them the wrong way. Was it already striped? Done by previous owner maybe. If so, your lucky it never came out and shot through the radiater. Is it out enough to get a screwdriver or some other flat object behind it? If so pry out while turning it with a wrench. It will come out.
Now. My opinion on flex fans. GARBAGE. Very loud. Gas guzzlers. power robbers.I tried the flex fan and was never so sorry in my life. Did I miss anything? You want to make a change, go electric.

So many problems .... So little time

trucky,

Don't you have a 4.7, with the factory electric also?

Get a big wrench, whack it with a hammer, counterclockwise, the whole clutch and all will come right off.

If you don't get rid of that rotating weight, it doesn't help much then.

The pulley is pressed on.

Others, and I, have done this over 4 years ago, it DOES add HP and TQ, a little.

YOu don't need anything else, unless you don't have the heavy duty radiator, and your truck is running warm anyway.

I did go to a 180 T stat, but didn't have to, I wanted to.

There are LOTS of old posts on this.

ok yah its an 05 4.7...and it wasnt stripped till i turned it...and it was stuck on...i thought i was turning it and realized it was just melting away like butter. i was so mad cuz the screw just came apart like it was foil or something. i sprayed loosener on it but it was too late. and i would do the screw driver/hammer/wrench whatever mega combo but the fan is relly in the way of this screw cuz its up against the fan. i dunno...i just put it all back together and cried a little.

Why would you try to do it any other way? The nut is 36mm (1.417"), not 300 mm. You can get by with a 1 7/16 (1.437") wrench instead.

Either run with no clutch or install a larger electric fan.

I used a pipe wrench, and put a short piece of 2x4 on it perpendicular to the wrench, and hit that with a hammer, once, and the large nut loosened up.

Other than the stock electric, an using a 180 t- stat, it runs barely off the lower hash mark, always. Even towing my sailboat.

Godd luck

I removed both clutch and electric fans (replaced one electric fan and two relays) and put in a Flex-i-lite 295 dual electric fan. Took 2.5 weeks on weekends and after work to modify the fan shroud. It is worth it; no more roar, better cooling especially when towing my 4700lb travel trailer in Western PA to Mich. I carry a spare elctric motor and two spare fan blades.

ok so i was warned...and i didnt listen. i took off the fan and behold...the heat came. the freeway was fine but in the city...i had to park and let it cool down cuz it was at the tip of the H. stupid idea on a 70 degree day. i will leave it on for now and wait to buy a flex-a-lite electric fan...
however when it was off and not overheating...it was def quieter and it might have been in my head but seemed to drive quicker...i duno.
