I installed my jba headers yesterday. It was a tight squeeze, but they're on. However, I'm getting a sound similar to a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle when i give it some throttle. Does anybody know why?

fot80, i have had that same sound appear whle i had my 98 CC 4x4 5.2. Its definately a exhaust leak somewhere. I believe after first putting the headers on your supposed to crank your vehicle and let the engine get hot, turn it off and let it sit till the headers are cool, then tighten the bolts again because metal expands when it gets hot and shrinks when it cools. The expanding metal surface area of the headers might have expanded and loosened the bolts causing the exhaust leak and sound. I would check the exhaust and make sure the gasket is seated properly and all bolts tightened to spec. If anyone sees an error in my suggestion or anything to add please feel free to add or tell me im wrong.

What we need is for a company to make a tuned tubular exhaust manifold out of cast iron or cast steel. This way we have the flow of header and the reliability and duarability of factory ehx. manifold Plus it will look stock and keep temps down in the engine compartment.

kicker01-I think you got it. I put the Borla headers on mine and had the same problem. After I let the headers cool...I rechecked the bolts they were definetly loose.
The Borla headers really did a # on my 4.7...for some reason I notice the intake sucking more. I've got the Airaid intake. My truck really screams above 3000RPM.

Anyone have any dyno results before and after adding the headers? Results for both Borla and JBA. I heard the JBA headers were no better than stock.

when a peice of metal that expands it gets bigger therefor when a header is bolted to a head and gets hot it grows in size 2 so when they grow togather they get tighter and what causes your exhaust to leak is the gasket shrinking so when you let it all cool the header goes back to its origanal size so does the head the gasket is still shrunk so then you have loose bolts

What you have is definitly an exhaust leak. What You should do is go get copper gaskets if they are made for the 4.7 yet and put those on. Make sure you have lock washers and are using loc-tite. Then put the headers on and get the engine hot then re torque them. Then after a long trip or a day of driving re torque them again and then it should be ok. The copper gaskets dont burn through that easy so if you ever hear a ticking sound in the future all you should have to do is re torque but i you use lock washers and loc-tite it should be trouble free.

Borla's headers came with "Stage 8" locking header bolts. They work great but, I still recheck my bolts to make sure. I don't think they make the copper gaskets yet, atleast I haven't seen any. If anyone knows of a place to get them let us know. I'd like to change mine.

a good trick i learnd with headers is to soak the gasket in water before you install them. when you bolt them down they will smash down better, just be sure not to over tighten them. then after you run the truck a day or so retighten them, not too tight. i hope this might help if you have not fixed it yet.
