I have heard very good reviews on the Z tube for the 4.7,I have some questions on the tube...is it emissions legal? What size is the OD of the tube?It looks like[from the picture] it would be easy to make,it looks like it is made from two 90 degree mandrel bent exhaust pipes welded together,I'm I wright or wrong?

The Tube is 3" OD. The tube is one mandrel bent pipe not 2 pipes welded and the pipe is ceramic coated. I don't know if it is emissions legal but I keep my stock airbox handy to pass inspection and the days I have to go the the dealer only take 2 minutes to change out.

I'm going to build my own intake, something similar to Don's setup on his 4.7. It's going to be made of 3" PVC piping and of course using a K&N filter. I plan to get the filter as close to the front of the engine bay, right behind the headlight. Then remove the rubber cover in front of the A/C pipes to let in more cold air. Then build a heat sheild out of 1/16" aluminium, so no hot air reaches the filter.

You guys want to see a home made version of the Z-TUBE for the 4.7

I am really intreested in the Z tube, but i think
i like the looks of the other filter system
that intense offers (it keeps the black plastic
cover ontop of the engine).. any big differnce in
performance to rectify the 100 dollar price differnce?? thank you......

Anthony thanks for the web site,I have been doing a lot of research on the 4.7 filter. In my opinion the Z tube is way over priced, most any one can make a Z tube, but the real trick is not to suck all the hot air in the tube.Don told me that he put a electronic thermometer in right at the TB ,once up to hi-way speeds the air coming into theTB has a 3-4 deg. rise from the out side air.[thats not good and he knows that]

Hey Bob, Don's intake is made out of PVC piping which is not really good for heat because it's only 1/8" thick. That's why the air in the intake is heating up. With ABS piping it's 1/4" thick which is double PVC, that should help in keeping the air cooler in the intake pipe.

Anyways, just wanted to tell you.

Thanks for that information, you might have some thing there,I didn't know that about the pipe. You know what I think..It is doing a [Monika] sucking to much hot air,the Z looks cool and it sounds cool, but it don't suck cool air.In my opinion, the only good one, is the one that is not on the market yet,[this summer]that would be the K&N FIPK that's the one I well get.

Thanks-Bob

Tony they are not very tick. The dyno shows with the FIPK,10 hp more at the rear wheels of a R/T [HotRod and Mopar magazine]and thats not bad.The key word here is COOL air,if that filter is not covered in some way,you only Monika hot air and hot air is not adding HP.In my opinion, the tube will build heat if it sets, but once you drive the truck, the in rushing air well take over.HEY BERND HELP ME OUT HERE,GIVE ME YOUR OPINION!

Hey Bob,

I read an article some where that the best piping to use would be aluminium, it flows cooler air than ABS. Sitting in traffic the pipe would heat up because it's metal it conducts heat. BUT once your moving the air in the tube will be cool. The air doesn't have enough time to warm up, because of the speed it travels in the intake (Alum & ABS) but not PVC. This article also said that ABS piping is not good for intakes, because it releases toxic fumes when heated!!! PVC piping like Don's intake should not be used at all, the piping is to thin and may melt with the heat. If I remember this web site address, I'll tell you.

I'm still going to use ABS piping, I'm going to make a heat shield/box for the filter. Maybe use heat reflective tape to cover the pipe and I will be painting it with high temperature engine paint. This should really help in keeping the air cooool.

Anthony you said what I said, but thanks for your input, you have been doing your reach on this interesting subject.I hope you find that web site.I don't have the money to waste on parts that don't give me the best bang for my buck.I have never seen any dyno test on the Z tube or any other open air filters, how bout it Mr Good wrench [Bernd]HeHeHe I like Dons set up and if you look closer you well see he is in the process of making a air shield.

I just put an open air cone filter (for a Honda Civic) on my wifes 99 Pontiac Montana. Got a 3" rubber PVC joint and two clamps after it fell off this morning (using the OEM rubber joint). Drove for 4-6 miles before I found out the filter fell off (tells you how tight the engine compartment is that it didn't even fall on the manifold). Fortunately, the MAF sensor has a mesh screen on it so nothing big got in.

Bob, now my 3400 SFI 8-seat Montana can keep up with your 4.7!
