Subject: engine bogging down real bad IP: Logged
Message: we had some 4 days of rain leading up to this weekend, so of course we went up mudding as soon as we got off work. ive had my 98 dakota about a year and three months now, and i guess ive never really hit puddles like these, because the first big puddle i hit, my engine bogged down real bad. one or two cylinders stopped firing in the low RPM range, but they kicked in about 2k RPMs. it got worse as the road got more and more muddy. my friends and i came to the conclusion that water was getting in the front two spark plugs, maybe under the distributer cap as well. makes sense cuz my engine was absolutely soaking. question for you all is, what can i do to prevent this next time? my friend's chevy did fine, while we had to sit around for a half hour waiting for my plugs to dry out so we could continue.

Message: Do you have the metal heat shields around the plugs?
Remove 'em.
Check the routing of the plug wires.

Message: i think you just suck up water through the air box. happened on my friends dakota and it happened to mine. its always good to have some starter fluid on you if your going out in the mud and water. the start fluid will start the motor right up even after being hydro-locked.
if i go out through mud i make sure i have it so the intake can not suck up water.

Message: could i insulate the spark plugs with some electrical tape or somethin? how well does that anti splash pan cost? never heard of them, but thats exactly what i need. i try to get 'er up to maybe 10-15 mph and hit the water. about as past as i could get the engine turning before i hit the water. not a great run in. hell of a time though.
