Message: Does it hurt the auto tranny to manually shift it? I always shift down to low at the light and then manually shift to 2nd and third. Also downshifting to slow down for light. They didn't offer a manual tranny in the R/T. Someone said shifting this way is bad. Myth or fact?

Message: Try and keep it to a minimum. i use to do it to while i was drive through the canyons i would downshift into 2nd and stick my foot in it or while off-road. my friend use to do it on his R/T. he would downshift into 2nd gear around 55+mph and finally after months of doing that he blow out second gear. this truck had a s/c on it so that probably help speed up the process.funny thing is the truck still went fine it just had to rev to about 3 grand in 1st before going into 3rd.
i just had my trans looked at and a shift kit installed and the trans guy said that there was metal shavings in the pan and the 1-2 shift bands were badly worn. i had the trans flushed when i got the truck and it was worn but no metal shavings. since the first change i had put 15k miles of shifting manual while racing and it has took its tole on the trans.
so i suggest you don't do it! I have heard its bad for the valve body as while.
i have 157k miles on my trans and its getting worn out. in the last month i have notice that its shifts really soft and early from 1st to 2nd. even with the shift kit install the 1-2 shifts are very weak. i have also worn out the TQ convert from doing stall launches.
so i suggest getting a shift kit installed while the trans is in good shape and to take good care of it now and not pay later!

Message: That shift leaver is there for good reason. To aid the driver in situations where being locked in a lower gear is an advantage. BUT. It is to be used within reason. If your going to slam it in a lower gear at speeds or under power as a performance option then get your wallet out. You will be needing it real soon. lots og people got it in there head if it's there it's there to be used/abused at will. These are the ones that call the trany junk. Driven as intended, they hold up well with the exception of the 3 or 4 persent that do fail. Keep in mind, I'm refuring to all makes here.

After all, an automatic trans does not work like the manuals,(keeping the car planted and stable on deceleration).
Auto trans sucks and i woul`d drive anything auto period.

Message: I Was a ferm believer in the manual for a lot of years. being a hard core hunter in the rockies, I was totally convonced the automatic was a sissy 4x4. Then I run across a 78 blazer in like new condition for cheap. sadly it had the auto but the 400 engine. Well long story short, I discovered what real traction and ride control was all about. Talk about smothing out the rocks. I wouldn't consider anything but an automatic in the really rough stuff. Undiscribable the advantages it has

Message: I always shift into neutral at the light, on the theory there is less drag on it idling than in gear.
I think all you do is prevent shifting when it would have wanted to, and be able to run to higher RPMs. You may pay some more for gas that way.
I read the reason race car drivers don't downshift to slow for curves is, brakes are cheaper than engines.

Message: Stock auto trannies are ill-suited to routine manual shifting. That's where the aftermarket kits come in, offering full manual/full auto capability, while simultaneously improving lubrication, and overall performance.

Message: What difference does it make if you shift the auto manually, up shift anyways. If you floor it, it will go up to redline anyways, what difference does it make if you shift it when you get there? Downshifting on the other hand i can see how it is rough on the tranny.....

Message: It doesn't make much difference if the limits of driving are of the floor-it-til-redline then shift variety. It was pretty easy to get one set up for that even before all the electronic controls, but there were many times when I wanted to blast out of a corner in second (or decel really hard in a tight corner and blast out in 1st!!!), and I didn't want to have the rear swing out from a sudden downshift when the tranny responded (at the worst possible moment), so being able to manually hold in a given gear, or pull back a gear at a certain point gives an extra degree of driving control and performance that simply cannot be done otherwise with an automatic. There's also the total blast of holding an engine in gear, so that you're way up in the powerband, then a hole in traffic opens up....floor it, move, then smartly upshift and you're gone. Otherwise, in the same situation, you're loafing in 3rd or overdrive, see that hole, punch it, wait while everything unlocks and the gears drop down. Now you're all cranked up and ready, but the moment has passed and all you can do is hit the brakes. Stick-shift types know what I'm talking about. I had a '69 Charger with 727 and the B&M TransPak. It's the only setup where I never missed not having a stick and clutch.

there is an advantage to being on cruise and not having to worry about the Highway Patrol..............or being rear-ended when you slow down while dialing your cell phone.

I've had all sorts of vehicles drive screwy around me while using the cell phone.
Although, Friday I did see (really) a woman backing out of a parking stall, yakking on her cell, and when she couldn't manuver (honest) she put it down!
God as my witness. She stopped talking to drive.
Well, she did pick it up as soon as she was straightened out.

Message: The big thing with manually shifting an auto is that it heats it up. You then need a bigger trans cooler to get rid of the extra heat. Overheated trans fluid is the number one killer of autos.

Message: hey texas todd, why must you always knock on any dak without a 4.7, manual tranny???? it gets really old. yea a 5 speed is fun, but at 6 a.m. when its -4 degrees outside and i have to go to work, i'm very happy i dont have to shift gears, mainly because i would never be able to do it while drinking my burning hot coffee and smoking my 3 cigarettes before i get to work. oh, and to stay on topic. manually shifting the auto is retarded. why would you do that? you're gonna end up looking at your transmission rolling around on the road in your rear-view.
