I was just wondering why everyone talks about the 4.7 and how great and fast it is. It seems to me the trucks are getting slower. My 98 R/C ran stock " 14.8 " in the 1/4mi. I took to the track after it had 4500 miles on it, and it was great. Also it was hotter than a horned toad in a microwave at the track. Please explain why the #'s for the 4.7's aren't that good. " Not that i'm saying there bad, but not as good ". Please don't take this personal, it's only a review. As far as the 5.9's are concerned. If you bought one, you got screwed. I still don't have as much invested as the R/T and I smoke them all the time.

Now 13.72 1/4mi

Red,
That's an easy one! The emission and fuel efficiency laws keep getting stricter.

These things keep getting choked down more and more. Hell, I'm absolutely amazed that they run as good as they do! How many catalytic convertors did your truck come with from the factory. Everybody talks about how they want to remove the cat (singular) because it's restrictive. The new ones come with 3! Then DC in their infinite wisdom, thinks that the best way to combat the poor fuel issue is to retard the timing. That get's them off the hook for lots of issues because the engines won't make enough power to sneeze with, let alone break parts. My 4.7 CC ran 14.87 right from the factory. Then the friggin' pcm went south and they replaced it for me under warranty. When the tech went to flash the pcm to include my vin and mileage, the only program available was one that was severely de-tuned with the timing retarded. Retarded is right!!! When I got it back I thought they had taken a couple of the cylinders out of the thing. I took it to the track and it ran 15.90s. What a crock! Anybody and everybody that had to get their pcm flashed for whatever reason is going to get this retarded program that absolutely kills your mileage and horsepower. I'm sure that it will only get worse with time.

Since I knew my truck would run a lot better than that I bitt the bullet and had my pcm re-programmed. Now I'm happy again. The truck now runs 14.60s. It also gets 50% better fuel mileage than after the "new" pcm.

As far as the 5.2 engine..... those have fantastic potential. They just never get talked about. I don't think there were THAT many that went as quick as yours. Otherwise we certainly would have been hearing about it. The earlier Dakotas were lighter, with less regulations and you don't hear that much about them either. The 5.2 vs 4.7 battle is one that's sure to heat up in the future. Both engines left the factory so close in performance to begin with. Why haven't we heard about 5.2 vs 5.9s?

I think the only reason the 4.7 vs 5.9 battle rages is because the 4.7 guys are proud they can go as fast as they can.....and the 5.9 guys are pissed because they're bigger engines are so choked by regulations and emission laws that their butts are being nipped at by the new kid on the block.

I would have to agree with Dunner. The emissions laws are getting stricter and engine's are getting smaller. I believe the 4.7s would be alot quicker if not for the restrictive exhaust and conservative PCM settings they come with from the factory. As for the 5.2, I had one my 98 for 3 years and it never let me down once. Too bad DC did away with that motor, it had as much aftermarket potential as the 5.9.

Don't worry kicker we can work around all these little obstacles on our 4.7's. Having these road blocks are sort of good or else we would all be running extrodinarily fast and that would take the satisfaction out of our effort and creativity to get these motors to do so. The 4.7 as a base platform is exceptional and the rest is up to us.

Oh MAN do I hate to hear that! Unfortunately all I could figure out was to send my cpm to a company that specializes in re-programming them. To begin with I was mad at my dealer. But in the end it wasn't really their fault......that's the only program they had for the 4.7 pcm.

I would say call Mike Leach. Right off-hand I don't have his number handy but he can fix it for you. I used a different company for mine, but the last time I posted their name & number I caught hell for it. I think Leach charges $400.00 for the service. I can't stress enough that this one mod will not only give you back your performance but will surpass it in a BIG way. I would say it's the single most important mod you can do. I know $400 is a big chunk but it's WAY worth it. The way it works is you have to package your pcm up and send it to Leach. He re-programs it and send it back to you. The fix ends up costing you 3 days of down time but I don't know how else you could do it. Hope this helps.

I am buying a dakota quad today. The only one they have with the power seat and a v8 is the 5.9. I really wanted the 4.7 but that doesn't seem to be an option within my grasp. Is the 5.9 really that bad and is there something I can do about the fuel economy on that hog?

I have the 5.9 and it is a Great engine. I have 200000 miles on mine plus and it still runs like new. Gas milage was crap in the start but after 10000 miles it loosened up and got a lot better. One thing that really helped was a K&N kit. Way better fuel economy. But its still a little shy of the 4.7 but its ok. One thing is that if you are towing a trailer with both the 4.7 and 5.9 the 5.9 will get better gas milage. The 5.9 is also really punchy from 0 - 60 i can get my durango to go 0-60 in 7.9 secs and it spins the tires which is somthing compaired to the Chevy tahoe which only can make a squeek. (Both trucks limited slip.) I never had a tune up or tranny service and i change the oil with castrol syntec every 5000miles and it has never been better. You will love the 5.9 and the way it sounds as you rumble around town and you will love the way it sounds when you open it up.

So, if the Dealer can flash a new program on to the PCM - what's the point of the Mopar Performance PCM? Is that just MP screwing us for the price of new hardware just to get some new EPROM Data?

Then, when my dealer flashed in my VIN and miles, is there a chance he blew away the MP programming and I'm back to some stock progamming?

I have a 5.2 in my 98 and love it! I drive a 99 Durango 4x4 at work, it has the 5.2 in it.. it is a dog! Our new 00 Durango 4x4 has a 4.7... major diff in the TWO DURANGOS. We have a 01 Durango on the way too.

the 99 5.2 is in the shop now for a broken oil pump.. the gage would drop to zero while doing the runway inspections etc... I would just keep on going! Drove it like that for several days... never died on me!

I love my 5.2, but man, the 4.7 is soooo sweeet
