Subject: please help with my tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94' Dakota and it has been running fine until yesterday at first it was kind of hopping then all the gears went out of it. A little while later I tried and the gears came back for about 10 secs and then quit again. After changing the tran filter and fluid it will go in all the forward gears now but when I put it in reverse it will completely quit 5 out of 6 times that I do it. Does anyone have any clue what might be making it do this??? any advice would be great :)

Message: Presume it is an automatic. Go to your friendly transmission shop. Havn't got one? Get a referral by asking who they would send their mother to.
You probibly have solenoid failure.

Message: Yep, it sounds like you might have a rebuild in your future unfortunately.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Message: All mine needed was a torque converter but who knows what the rest of your tranny has been through. find someone honest to look at it. it was $500 with labor to install mine with new seals and fluid. you could probably find a used one for that if you call a lot of junk yards.

Message: ashley
the reverse clutch isn't getting any pressure or enough pressure or the clutch is worn out. make sure the fluid is at the proper level. you should check this with the truck warmed up and the trans in netural.
your trans is a 42rh
do you get the hopping when you first start the truck with the engine cold and you put it into gear? if there is along delay in the time that you put into gear and the truck actual starts moving than it could be that your torque convert is leaking alittle bit of fluid back into the pan over night and simple just as to fill all the way back up. if that is the case just give the truck alittle more time to warm up before putting it into drive and this might fix some of that hopping.
i dont think you have gear damage. sounds more like pressure issues.
good luck.

Message: Sounds like your valve body has wore out allowing at least one valve to hang up. If this is true, you well need to buy the intire valve body assembaly.
So many problems .... So little time
