Message: i know i want gibson headers but theres a dillema on which metal to get... i know ceramic is best but it costs soo much more. is there relly that big of a performance difference when it comes down to nickel vs. ceramic??

Message: Ceramic will retain heat or rather keep the heat out of the engine compartment and inside the headers better and they will usually retain their finish a slight bit better as well...
My own personal opinion is to get a set of long tubes either specially made for or allready in existence for your truck... I'm asuming it's a v8 dakota that the headers are being bought for??? Long tubes with "stepped primarys" are best if you have the 4 tubes divide out into 2 tubes then finally merge into the 1 tube collector... "4 into 2 into 1 setup" and ask to make sure the collectors have the "little pyramid" in them so as the exhaust pulses have a little more time to get "acquainted" better... This will give you an all around best torque and power output due to the exhaust pulses being scavenged better... This will also minimize backpressure a touch more as well...
Hope this will help in your decision making a little bit...

Message: The TV show "Trucks" had a special on headers. Ceramics are by far the best because of the heat advantage Huggins mentioned.
If you can't get ceramic, get Stainless steel. Do NOT get the chrome plated nickel or exposed nickel. The performance shop that installed my friends headers mentioned they warp, have corrosion issues, and leak more often.
In my opinion, if the difference between ceramic and stainless is under $150, then just save up for them cause they really are worth it. Even with heat shields, non-ceramic headers have a bad habit of killing starters due to the heat that radiats off them.

Message: IF YOU ABSOLUTELY CANT AFFORD CERAMIC HEADERS, BUY THE CHEAPER. YOU CAN GET A 5O FT ROLL OF "HEADER WRAP" FROM SUMMIT TO ABSORB/REDUCE HEAT. I THINK ITS 35 BUCKS.

this topic of 'wrapping' had been discussed...not good for the warranty...and sometimes not good overall

Message: Yes for everyday drivers header wrap is a very very bad idea... It traps moisture and will innevitably cause the headers to rust or corrode through...
Yes, I guess shorties aren't that bad of a setup and since it would probably be around $1000 to get a set custom made you would be money ahead to use the shorties unless that is if you are planning on doing any sort of racing or you just have plenty of money to spend...
The only disadvantage to the shorties is that your power band may or may not be useable... Tube lengths are just like intake runner lengths, you change the length and in turn you move your power band... BUT then again the shorties are deffenately better than stock, because they do atleast allow for exhaust pulse scavenging to one degree or another...
So all and all go with the ceramic coated shorties if that's what you've been looking for... Sorry I wasn't able to offer any more help than this...

Message: I've got over 50000 miles on my Chrome Gibsons. No problems with them other than getting them torqued done at first. I think they add a little low end torque that wasn't there before. Keeps it from downshifting as much with heavy loads.

Message: trucky,
My 3.9 auto, showed a dramatic improvement around the RPM's where it lives. My benchmark, has been 55 MPH at the top of the on-ramp. Pushes 70 now.
About 2MPG better than stock. High 18's to 19's, depending on the season.
It does sound a bit manlier, maybe because of the thinner manifold metal and also because it breathes better and runs smoother.
Mine are stainless and have a nise brown color like the rest of the exhaust. You can't go wrong buying the best you can afford.
